West Virginia Shines in Game Three Win

Granville, W. Va. - Wrapping up a three-game home stand, the West Virginia Moonshiners defeated the State College Spikes 7-4 at Monongalia County Ballpark.

The win snapped a seven-game losing streak for West Virginia, as the home team came out of hibernation to put up its most runs in a game since July 11.

The Moonshiners got things started in the bottom of the first inning. With men on second and third, C Zac Susi cracked a single to right field to drive home the game's first run.

LF Daniel Amaral also brought around a run on an RBI groundout to give West Virginia a 2-0 lead after two innings.

Then in the bottom of the third, the Moonshiners tacked on two more runs. RF Brett Kinneman roped a double to right field to bring home one man around, followed by a sac-fly from C Grant Koch to double the home team's lead.

After State College got on the board with a home run in the top of the fourth, West Virginia responded quickly in the bottom half of the inning. With a runner on first, Amaral came back up and lined a two-run homer just inside of fair territory to give his team a commanding 6-1 lead.

P Alex Manasa had a nice night on the mound for the Moonshiners. In five innings of work, the righty gave up three runs on just three hits, striking out one batter while walking three others on the way to his second win of the season.

The second and third Spikes runs came in the fifth inning on a 2-RBI triple to put the score at 6-3.

Once Manasa's day was finished, P Nicholas Economos came in for three innings of work to preserve the Moonshiners' lead. The reliever allowed only one run on two hits, striking out one batter while walking another.

Economos's lone run came in the seventh inning, as State College scored on a groundout to put the visitors down only two runs. West Virginia got that run back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI fielder's choice from SS Connor Kaiser to give the Moonshiners a 7-4 advantage.

Nursing a three-run lead, West Virginia turned to P Conner Loeprich to pick up the save and lock up a victory in the series finale. The righty did just that, retiring the Spikes to secure the Moonshiners' twelfth win of the season.

West Virginia heads on the road for a three-game series with the Williamsport Crosscutters. First pitch for game one is scheduled for tomorrow at 7:05 p.m.
