State College Spikes News Release

BURLINGTON, VT - The State College Spikes scored the lone run of the game in the first inning, and Mike Jefferson, Jordan Cooper and Jesus Britocombined to make the lead stand up as the Spikes took back-to-back road victories for the first time in 2011 with a 1-0 win over the Vermont Lake Monsters on Thursday afternoon at Centennial Field.

Junior Sosa scored the State College (17-30) run after reaching base with a one-out infield single. Chris Lashmet then followed Alex Dickerson's base hit with a fielder's choice to bring in Sosa and make it 1-0, Spikes.

Jefferson started for State College and allowed just one hit to Vermont (24-22) in the first four innings. The left-hander walked three batters but struck-out a career-high five in his third start of the year, and did not allow a baserunner with less than two outs.

Cooper (1-3) was the next man on the mound for the Spikes, and was the second straight State College pitcher to earn his first professional victory. The win did not come without a tense moment, however, as he loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth inning before getting Chad Oberackerto fly out to center field to preserve the lead. Cooper allowed three hits, two walks and one hit batsman over his four innings on the mound.

Brito (1) ended the afternoon with a perfect ninth inning to pick up his first save of the year in two opportunities.

Wes Freeman went 2-for-4 on the game, and now has six multi-hit performances in his last eight games. State College also picked up its first series victory on the road this year with the win.

Vermont starter Tyler Vail (1-3) took the loss after allowing the Spikes' lone run on a total of five hits and a walk while striking out three over 5 1/3 innings.
