Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Tonight's Match-up
The Aberdeen IronBirds go for the series win tonight at the Lowell Spinners (Class-A Short-Season affiliate of the Boston Red Sox). After dropping the opener of the series, Aberdeen snapped a five-game losing streak last night by beating Lowell 1-0 in 11 innings. Parker Bridwell got the start, pitching six shutout innings. Brandon Erbe, Zach Fowler, and Kyle Simon pitched the final five innings scoreless. With a runner on first and one out in the 11th, Kyle Hoppy hit an RBI-triple to give the IronBirds the first lead of the ball game. Tonight, right-hander Tyler Wilson will make his IronBirds debut. He'll go up against fellow right-hander Jason Garcia.
Who needs hits'
The IronBirds won last night in spite of the fact that they had just two hits in the game. It was the second time this season the IronBirds have been two-hit. So far in the month of August, Aberdeen is batting just .149 as a team.
Hoppy's Hits
Eight of the nine hitters in the IronBirds lineup went hitless last night through 11 innings. Hoppy collected both Aberdeen hits, including what turned out to be the game-winning base knock. Hoppy has multiple hits in five of the last 10 games he's played.
Simon Says... You're Out
Simon picked up his first professional win last night after pitching three scoreless innings of relief. Simon surrendered two hits and struck out one in his three innings. So far this season, Simon has allowed just the two hits in six scoreless frames.
Bridwell's Brilliance
After two rough outings in-a-row, Bridwell bounced back strong last night. In six scoreless innings of work, Bridwell surrendered just three hits and no walks. He struck out six batters. Bridwell is now tied for the league-lead in strikeouts with 52 in 43.2 innings of work.
10th Rounder on the Mound Tonight
Wilson, the Baltimore Orioles 10th-round pick in this year's draft, will make his first Aberdeen start tonight. Wilson pitched for four seasons at the University of Virginia, where he went a perfect 10-0 this past spring. The Cavaliers went all the way to the College World Series semi-finals where they fell to the University of South Carolina. Six of the Orioles top 10 picks in this year's draft are now IronBirds.
