-SPIKES LOOK FOR SERIES VICTORY ON THE ROAD: The State College Spikes can win a series on the road for the first time in 2011 as they face the Vermont Lake Monsters in the rubber match of a three-game series today at Centennial Field. The Lake Monsters are in their first year as an Oakland Athletics affiliate. State College is 8-7 against Vermont all-time, with a 2-4 record at Centennial Field. Today marks the Spikes' third day game of the year.

-LAST GAME: Ryan Hafner earned his first professional victory with five strong innings on the mound and Taylor Lewis collected three hits, including a triple, as the Spikes held on for a 5-3 win over the Lake Monsters on Wednesday night at Centennial Field. Hafner, the Pirates' 17th-round draft choice in 2010, allowed two runs, one of them earned, in the first inning, but no more after that. The Lee's Summit, MO native yielded a total of five hits and two walks while striking out two in the win. Lewis started off a four-run Spikes fourth with his sixth triple of the season to right-center field.

-SPIKES SEND JEFFERSON TO MOUND: Left-hander Mike Jefferson gets his third start of the year and makes his tenth overall appearance of the season for the Spikes today. Jefferson, the 22nd round draft pick of the Pirates in 2011 out of Louisiana Tech, has had opposite outcomes in each of his first two starts. The southpaw allowed six runs in 2/3 of an inning in his pro debut on June 26, but came back with four shutout innings on July 9 against Batavia.

-VERMONT GOES TO VAIL FOR FINALE: Vermont will go with right-hander Tyler Vail on the hill in the final game of the series against State College. Vail, a native of Easton, PA, was selected in the fifth round of the 2010 MLB Draft out of Notre Dame-Green Pond High School. Vail earned the win against Brooklyn last time out, allowing one run over 5 1/3 innings on Saturday. The righty started the 2011 season with the Single-A Burlington Bees.
