Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
AUBURN, NY - The Connecticut Tigers got swept in a doubleheader at the hands of the Auburn Doubledays on Thursday night falling 6-5 in the opening game and 6-3 in the nightcap from Falcon Park.
In game one the Tigers jumped out to a 4-0 lead through the first four and a half innings.
Connecticut scored a run in the first on a Dean Green RBI single and a run in the second on a Jeff Holm groundout RBI. They put two on the board in the fifth as Jason King picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice and Aaron Westlake added and RBI single.
Connecticut starter Brennan Smith retired the first ten batters he faced before Bryce Ortega got Auburn's first hit of the game in the fourth inning.
Auburn then cut the Tigers lead in half in the fifth on a two-run triple from Billy Burns to make it 4-2 Connecticut.
The Tigers tacked on an insurance run in the seventh, as Eugenio Suarez came in to score on a wild pitch from Christian Garcia to give the Tigers a 5-2 lead. With the doubleheader, two seven-inning games, Connecticut had a comfy three-run lead with Auburn going into their last at-bat.
However, the Doubledays stingy offense would come up big in the bottom of the seventh. Justin Miller and Russell Moldenhauer drew back-to-back walks, while an Angelberth Montilla RBI single ended the day for Smith. Melvin Mercedes entered the game, walked Jeremy Mayo, and gave up an RBI single to Billy Burns to bring Auburn within one. They would tie the game at five on a Caleb Ramsey RBI base hit and send the game to extra innings.
The Tigers had the go-ahead run on third base in both the eighth and ninth inning, but could not get the runner in. Auburn then got a two-out double from Bryce Ortega in the bottom of the ninth and earned the 6-5 win on a Matt Skole walk-off single.
The Doubledays used the momentum from the walk-off win to start game two on a tear. They put up three runs in the first inning and two more in the second to take an early 5-0 lead.
Connecticut cut the deficit to two with three runs in the third, using and RBI double from Tyler Collins, sacrifice fly by Dean Green and Samir Rijo RBI single to slice into the Auburn lead.
However, the combo of Travis Henke and Aaron Barrett combined to shut down the Tigers offense the rest of the way, with the Tigers falling 6-3 in game two.
The Tigers look to turn things around, as they continue the five-game road trip tomorrow evening with the first game of a two-game set with the Lowell Spinners. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM.
