Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Lowell, MA - On Wednesday night, the Aberdeen IronBirds mustered just one run on two hits in an 11-inning win against the Lowell Spinners. What a difference a day makes. The IronBirds scored seven runs in the first two innings Thursday night and never looked back, as they defeated the Spinners 9-1.
The IronBirds took a three-run lead in the first inning. Glynn Davis reached on an infield hit. Sammie Starr walked. After Dudley Leonora sacrificed them to second and third, Wynston Sawyer hit a two-run double off the left-field wall. Mychal Givens singled and Connor Narron walked, loading the bases. Austin Knight grounded out to second, knocking in Sawyer, and making it 3-0.
Aberdeen tacked on four more in the second. Kyle Hoppy led off the frame with a walk. A batter later, Starr (2) blasted a two-run homer to left-field, making it 5-0.
The next batter, Leonora, walked. Sawyer grounded a ball back to the mound that should have been an inning-ending double-play ball. Instead, Jason Garcia threw the ball into center field, allowing Leonora to get to third. Givens knocked him in on an RBI-single. After Narron flied out to center, Knight knocked in Sawyer with a single to right field, giving Aberdeen a 7-0 lead
Lowell got on the scoreboard in the third. With two men down, Jose Garcia (4) hit a solo homer to left.
The IronBirds tacked on another run in the sixth. With one out, Starr doubled. Sawyer knocked him in with a single.
Aberdeen tacked on its ninth and final run in the ninth inning. Givens grounded a double down the left-field line. He advanced to third on a ground-out and then scored on Knight's sacrifice fly.
In his IronBirds debut, Tyler Wilson pitched four innings and allowed just the one run on four hits. The 10th-round pick of the Baltimore Orioles in this year's draft, Wilson walked none and struck out four.
Angel Cespedes (1-2) got the win after pitching 3.2 innings of scoreless relief. Garcia (3-3) took the loss after allowing seven runs (five earned) in 1.2 innings.
The IronBirds head to Wappingers Falls, NY Friday to begin a two-game series at the Hudson Valley Renegades (Class-A Short Season affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays). The IronBirds will have reigning New York-Penn League Pitcher of the Week Trent Howard (2-1, 2.30) on the hill. He'll go up against right-hander Parker Markel (3-1, 0.89). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
The Aberdeen IronBirds sold out season tickets for the 10thstraight season. Group packages and single-game tickets, however, are still available for the 2011 season. For ticket information, contact our box office at (410) 297-9292 or visit us online at www.IronBirdsbaseball.com.
