State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA - Bruce Caldwell hit his first home run with the State College Spikes to bring them within a run late in the game, but the Jamestown Jammers held on to take a 6-5 victory in a back-and-forth affair at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Sunday night.
The game was delayed 1 hour, 45 minutes at the outset by lightning in the vicinity of the ballpark, but once the action commenced, both teams wasted no time getting on the board. Jodaneli Carvajal led off the game with a triple to right field for Jamestown (5-2), and the former State College (4-3) infielder scored on a Jin-De Jhang single two batters later.
The Spikes struck back in the bottom half, however, beginning a pattern of Jamestown taking the lead and State College responding. Jimmy Bosco, who ended up 2-for-5 in the game, also led off with a triple and scored on Cesar Valera's groundout to tie the game.
Jamestown put up three more runs in the second inning to grab the lead again, with former Spike Yhonathan Barrios plating a run with a sacrifice fly to right and Michael Fransoso adding an RBI single sandwiched around an errant catch attempt by State College left fielder Ronald Castillo would have ended the inning.
The home club chipped away with solitary runs in the next three frames, though. Luke Voit brought in a run with an RBI single in the second, and David Washington notched a sacrifice fly to center with the bases loaded in the third to bring the Spikes within a run at 4-3. After Carvajal reached on an infield single in the fourth and scored on an error and a double play ball to add a Jamestown run, Valera came right back with an RBI single to make the score 5-4 headed into the fifth.
The Jammers tacked another run on in the seventh inning as Jimmy Rider, another 2012 Spike, doubled in Dan Collins to bring the lead to 6-4.
Caldwell's long ball was a solo shot with a count of 0-1 in the seventh inning, and gave the Spikes hope heading into the final two frames. However, the Jammers nailed down the win as yet another player who spent 2012 in State College, Kevin Kleis (1), recorded the final six outs in a row for the save.
Bosco was the only Spike with multiple hits in the game, and Valera reached base twice to go with his two runs batted in.
State College starter Juan Bautista (0-2) took the loss. Bautista matched the longest outing by a Spikes pitcher this year at 5 1/3 innings, but yielded five runs, tow earned, on eight hits and a season-high four walks. The right-hander also struck out two.
Colten Brewer (2-0) started and earned the win for Jamestown after giving up four runs, three earned, on five hits and two walks. Brewer also hit two batters and struck out three.
Carvajal and Rider each recorded a pair of hits and a sacrifice bunt in the game to pace the Jammers' offense. Jamestown laid down five bunts in the game, with three sacrifices and two hits. Harold Ramirez and Jeff Roy also produced multiple hits for the Jammers.
Nine players in total on the Jammers' roster participated in a game for the Spikes in 2012, with Jamestown manager Dave Turgeon and pitching coach Mike Steele earning a win against their old club as well.
The loss deprived the Spikes of the chance to take sole possession of the Pinckney Division lead after one week of the season. State College will have the opportunity to match Jamestown atop the division tomorrow when they face the Jammers in a 7:05 p.m. matchup at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
The Spikes will have right-hander Chris Perry (0-0) on the mound in his second career start, while Jamestown will put a former Spike on the mound in righty Dovydas Neverauskas (0-0). Neverauskas made one appearances for State College last year, allowing one run on two hits and two walks while striking out four over four innings of work at Jamestown (then an affiliate of the Miami Marlins).
