Powell's Glove And Speed Help Vermont To 3-1 Win Sunday

BURLINGTON, VT --- Boog Powell saved at least one run with an outstanding catch in the third inning, then scored the go ahead run in the bottom of the seventh inning on a two-out B.J. Boyd RBI double to lead the Vermont Lake Monsters to a 3-1 New York-Penn League victory over the Lowell Spinners Sunday evening at historic Centennial Field.

Lowell led 1-0 with an unearned run in the first inning and had another runner on second base with one out in the third inning when Kevin Mager smashed a line drive deep to centerfield over the head of Powell, who ran the ball down and made a diving back-to-the-plate catch to keep the Spinners from adding to their lead.

The Lake Monsters were finally able to get on the scoreboard in the sixth inning when Chad Pinder led off with a single single, moved to third on a one-out Jaycob Brugman single to left and scored on a Kelvin Rojas RBI fielder's choice groundout. Then in the seventh, Powell grounded a two-out single to center and then just beat the throw home on Boyd's line drive double to rightfield for a 2-1 Vermont lead.

Vermont added an insurance run in the eighth when Rojas advanced to second on a wild pitch, then scored on a two-out wild pitch and throwing error to third by catcher David Spolika for a two-run lead. Trevor Bayless tossed a scoreless ninth inning and struckout Manuel Margot with the tying runs on base to end the game for his first save of the season.

Starter Dylan Covey, Oakland's fourth-round pick in the 2013 draft out of the University of San Diego, allowed one unearned run on two hits with three strikeouts over two innings in his first professional appearance. After two scoreless innings from Lou Trivino in his pro debut, Deyvi Jimenez (1-1) did not allow a hit in four scoreless innings to pick up the win. Including the two innings Jimenez tossed in Vermont's no-hitter vs. Tri-City September 1, 2012, Jimenez has now thrown six straight hitless innings at Centennial Field.

The Spinners had just three hits on the night, none coming after a Tzu-Wei Lin leadoff single in the third inning. Lowell reliever Sergio Gomez allowed two runs on five hits with eight strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings to take the loss. Boyd, Pinder and Brugman each had two hits for Vermont (3-4), which has now allowed just one run in each of their three wins this season.

Vermont and Lowell will play the second of the three-game series at Centennial Field on Monday starting at 7:05 pm. The first 2,000 fans will receive a voucher for a free attractions activity at Stowe Mountain Resort. The six-game homestand then concludes on Tuesday with the Lake Monsters and Spinners wrap up the series at 7:05 pm.
