Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - The Spinners recorded just three hits and the Vermont Lake Monsters broke through for single runs in each of the last three innings to hand Lowell their second consecutive loss in the first game of their five-game road trip, 3-1.
Lowell (3-3) continued an early season trend, scoring in the first inning for the fourth time in six games. Manuel Margot started things with a one-out single, stealing second base. Vermont had Margot picked off at second, but the outfielder advanced safely when third baseman Luis Baez dropped the ball in the ensuing rundown. Kevin Mager followed with a run-scoring single to put the Spinners ahead, 1-0.
The score would remain there until the sixth inning when the Lake Monsters were able to break through against Sergio Gomez. Chad Pinder led off the inning with a single, advancing to third on a one-out single by Jaycob Brugman. With runners on the corners, a groundout by Kelvin Rojas brought home Pinder to knot the score at one.
The Lake Monsters would take the lead one inning later with a two-out rally. After Boog Powell singled, B.J. Boyd delivered a double over the head of Williams Jerez in right field, scoring Powell to put the Spinners in a 2-1 hole.
Vermont (3-4) tacked on an insurance run in the eighth inning against Chris Carpenter, making his third rehab appearance. After reaching on a two-out fielder's choice, Rojas would advance to second on a wild pitch, scoring when David Sopilka's throw ended up in the outfield after a second wild pitch for what would hold as a 3-1 final.
Heri Quevedo, making a rehab appearance from Hi-A Salem, made it through two innings scoreless. He allowed three hits and walked a batter, striking out two. Gomez (0-1, 1.86) pitched well but was saddled with the loss, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk. He struck out eight. Carpenter pitched the final 1.1, allowing the one unearned run, striking out two.
Offensively, the three Spinners hits were recorded by the top three batters in the line-up: Tzu-Wei Lin, Margot and Mager. Jerez, on base twice, recorded two stolen bases in the loss.
The Spinners look to right the ship Monday evening at Centennial Field when Mario Alcantara (1-0, 0.00) looks to follow-up his five scoreless innings in his NYPL debut with a 7pm first pitch.
