State College Spikes News Release

WILLIAMSPORT, PA - Alex Dickerson delivered his first professional hit with a wall-ball double in the seventh inning, but the State College Spikes were held to just three hits total by Williamsport Crosscutters pitching in a 7-0 defeat on Saturday night at Historic Bowman Field.

Dickerson, the Pirates' third-round draft choice out of Indiana University this June, was retired on a groundout and a popout in his first two at-bats. The left-handed slugger rebounded to drive a pitch from Williamsport (15-14) starter Colin Kleven (2-1) off the outfield fence in left-center field, though, and give the Spikes (8-21) a scoring opportunity in the seventh.

Kleven, after allowing Chris Lashmet to reach on an error, would get the final out of the inning, though. The right-hander yielded just two hits and notched two strikeouts over seven innings of work to get the win, becoming the first Crosscutters pitcher to go that distance this year. Lashmet and Ashley Ponce produced the other State College hits on the evening.

Williamsport struck the first blow off of Spikes starter Matt Benedict (1-1) in the second inning, as Kenny Miramontes doubled in the Crosscutters' initial run. Miramontes would go on to drive in two more runs in the fifth inning on a single to left field that ended Benedict's night. Williamsport plated a total of three runs in that frame, adding two in the third and a final run in the seventh to complete the scoring.

Benedict took his first pro loss and went less than five innings for the first time in four outing. The right-hander allowed a total of six runs, four of them earned, on 11 hits and two walks while striking out two over 4 2/3 innings. Jesus Brito followed Benedict and gave up one unearned run on a hit and a walk over 2 1/3 innings, keeping his earned run average for the year at 0.00. Emmanuel De Leon pitched a perfect eighth inning to finish the game for the Spikes.

The Spikes and Crosscutters next head back to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park to play two more games in the SawBuck Series, beginning with Sunday's 6:05 p.m. matchup. State College is slated to send right-hander Stetson Allie (0-0) to the mound. Allie cracked 99 miles per hour in his last outing, becoming the fastest pitcher yet recorded in a game at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The Olmsted Falls, OH native has 17 strikeouts and 12 walks over his last 15 innings of work.

Williamsport will go with right-hander Austin Wright (1-0), who has not yet faced the Spikes this year in five outings.

The Spikes are home for seven of the next nine nights starting on Sunday, which marks a very special evening at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
