WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY - The Hudson Valley Renegades used an eighth inning solo home run from Jeff Malm to take down the Connecticut Tigers 4-3 on Saturday night at Dutchess Stadium.
With the game tied at three in the eighth Rayni Guichardo came in to relieve Tigers starter Luis Sanz and served up a solo shot to Malm, the first batter of the inning. It was Malm's New York-Penn League leading seventh long ball of the season.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI double from Eugenio Suarez, but the Renegades returned the favor with two runs in the second to take a 2-1 lead of their own.
Connecticut regained the lead in the top of the fourth. With Jason King at third base, Curt Casali smashed a double into the left field gap to tie the game, while Zach Maggard followed with an RBI single to score Casali and put the Tigers on top 3-2.
The lead did not last long, as Hudson Valley tied the game at three in the bottom of the fourth. With runners on first and third, Brian Bryles laid down a successful suicide squeeze bunt that scored Tanner Biagini from third.
The game would remain knotted up until Malm broke the tie in the eighth. The Tigers had a chance for a comeback in the ninth. Jeff Holm and Casali both drew walks and advanced to second and third respectively on a wild pitch from Mickey Jannis. However, Zach Maggard and pinch hitter Matt Perry both struck out to end the game.
Luis Sanz put in his longest outing of the year, working seven innings and giving up three runs on six hits, while Guichardo suffered the loss for the Tigers. Jannis worked five hitless innings out of the bullpen for Hudson Valley to pick up his second win of the year.
The Tigers will try to even the series with the Hudson Valley Renegades tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is set for 5:05 PM.
