Auburn Doubledays News Release
Brooklyn, NY - Friday night in Brooklyn was one to forget for the Auburn Doubledays. Auburn set a new season-high in errors with five, four coming within the game's first two innings, and watched Brooklyn tally 10 runs in a 10-4 defeat to the Cyclones at MCU Park on Friday night.
Things got ugly in a hurry for the Doubledays, who surrendered four unearned runs, all in the first two innings. Brooklyn scored one in the first (unearned), three in the second (unearned), another in the third, three more in the fourth, and two in the sixth, putting the finishing touches on the convincing 10-4 win.
The bulk of the Doubledays' errors came in inning number three, with throwing errors by Matt Skole and Carlos Alvarez and a fielding error by Alvarez giving the Cyclones three runs. Doubledays' starter Wirkin Estevez could never recover, leaving after four innings with eight runs against him, four earned.
Auburn's offense couldn't seem to get anything together either, scoring just one run on two hits in the game's first six innings on an RBI base-hit by Adrian Nieto in the fourth, plating Matt Skole who doubled earlier in the inning.
The Doubledays added three runs in the top of the ninth, all coming with two outs. Wilfri Pena drew a walk, Carlos Alvarez singled, and Connor Rowe walked before a wild pitch allowed Pena to score and Alvarez and Rowe to advance into scoring position. Next up was Rick Hughes, and with two strikes against him, he lined a single into right field, scoring Pena and Rowe, pulling the Doubledays within six runs at 10-4. Unfortunately, the comeback ended there as Hendry Jimenez was called out on strikes to end the contest, and the Cyclones walked away with the six run win.
Auburn will look to get back to its winning ways Saturday night when it hosts the Batavia Muckdogs for game one of a three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm at Falcon Park on Syracuse Night, where fans are invited to wear their orange and show off their Syracuse University pride.
