Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Burlington, VT - One night after coming from behind and knocking off the Vermont Lake Monsters in extra innings, the Aberdeen IronBirds' second comeback attempt in as many nights fell just short. Aberdeen dropped the opener of a three-game set at Vermont by a final score of 4-3.
The IronBirds took the lead in the first inning. In his first game back with the IronBirds, Sammie Starr doubled down the left field line with one man out. Joe Velleggia knocked him in with an RBI-single.
Vermont struck back in the second against rehabbing starting pitcher and former Baltimore Orioles first-round pick Matt Hobgood. With one out, Hobgood hit Jordan Tripp with a pitch. Jacob Tanis reached on a single. Nick Rickles hit a base-clearing double, giving the Lake Monsters the 2-1 lead.
The Lake Monsters tacked on a third run in the fourth inning. With one man down, Rickles was hit by a pitch. Sam Roberts then hit a ground ball back to the pitcher. Hobgood threw to second to get the lead runner, but Mychal Givens' throw to first was wild, allowing Roberts to get to second. Aaron Shipman knocked him in with an RBI-single.
Hobgood left the game after the fourth. He surrendered three runs, two earned, on five hits. Hobgood walked one, hit a batter, and struck out three.
The IronBirds took Hobgood off the hook for the loss as they tied the game up in the fifth. Kyle Hoppy led off the inning with a single. Dudley Leonora reached on an error on the third baseman. Glynn Davis moved them both over with a sacrifice bunt. Starr knocked in Hoppy on a ground out to third. Givens struck a double, knocking in Leonora, and making it a 3-3 game.
Rehabbing right-hander Ryan Berry entered the game in the fifth. After pitching two scoreless innings, Vermont touched him up in the seventh inning. Chad Oberacker led off the frame with a triple. Chad Lewis knocked him in on an RBI-single.
Berry exited after the seventh. He surrendered an earned run on five hits and one walk in three innings of work. He struck-out two.
Drew Bailey (3-0) got the win after pitching 2.1 scoreless innings of relief. Berry (0-1) took the loss. Jeff Urlaub (2) struck out the final two batters of the ball game to notch the save.
These two clubs will meet again tomorrow in game two of a three-game series at Centennial Field. Aberdeen will have right-hander Mike Wright (0-0, 3.00) on the bump. He'll go up against fellow right-hander J.C. Menna (2-1, 4.26). First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 PM.
The Aberdeen IronBirds sold out season tickets for the 10thstraight season. Group packages and single-game tickets, however, are still available for the 2011 season. For ticket information, contact our box office at (410) 297-9292 or visit us online at www.IronBirdsbaseball.com.
