Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
SALISBURY, MD - In a tie game in the top of the ninth inning, John Spatola hit a one-out triple with two on, scoring two runs and giving the Kannapolis Intimidators a 4-2 lead against the Delmarva Shorebirds. The Intimidators added another run as they won the ballgame 5-2.
Spatola scorched the ball to center, his second of two triples in the game and he scored Jordan Cheatham who singled and Miguel Gonzalez who walked to break the tie off Clayton Schafer in his Shorebirds (26-38) debut. Spatola later scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-2 before Orlando Santos struck out the side in the ninth for his 15th save in as many attempts.
Cameron Bayne started and worked well again for the Intimidators (32-32) picking up the no decision as he went seven innings allowing six hits and one earned run. Matt Hobgood, the fifth overall selection in the 2009 draft went five innings and allowed a run in the fourth after a leadoff triple by Jake Oester who scored on an RBI-groundout by Tyler Saladino.
After the Intimidators tied the game at one in the fourth, they took a 2-1 lead on back-to-back doubles with two outs off Brian Parker who worked three innings. Trayce Thompson doubled to right, followed by a Jordan Cheatham double to take the lead. However, Bayne allowed a run in the bottom of the inning and the game was back even before the Intimidators won it in the ninth.
Kevin Moran (1-0) gets the win, his first as he worked a clean inning in the eighth, stranding the bases loaded as the Intimidators are back at .500.
The Intimidators look to get a game above the even mark on Wednesday as Justin Collop goes for his tenth win of the year, he will be opposed by Scott Copeland who is making his Shorebirds debut at 7:05 pm at Arthur W. Purdue Stadium.
