HICKORY, NC - The Hickory Crawdads dropped both games of the doubleheader against the Asheville Tourists - 2-1 in game 1 and 6-3 in the eight-inning game 2 - before 1,856 fans at Historic McCormick Field on Tuesday night.
The Crawdads (71-62, 31-32) got out to an early lead in the first seven-inning game with an RBI single by DH Yefry Castillo in the top of the second frame. LHP Robbie Erlin kept the Tourists (66-67, 37-27) off the board until the sixth frame.
After Erlin left with one on and one out in the bottom of the sixth, the Tourists tied it against RHP Ovispo De Los Santos (1-3) on an RBI triple by 2B Angelys Nina and took the lead on an RBI base hit by LF Avery Barnes, going on to take the first game, 2-1. De Los Santos was tagged with the loss for Hickory, while RHP Dan Perkins (6-5) got the win and RHP Paul Bargas registered the save for Asheville.
Both teams exchanged early runs in the second game as well, before Hickory pulled ahead with two runs in the top of the sixth for a 3-1 lead. However, Asheville again came back in the bottom of the sixth, this time utilizing a two-run homer from Cleary, Jr. to tie it, 3-3.
After a scoreless seventh, the game progressed to extra innings, when 3B Nolan Arenado belted Asheville to the 6-3 win with a walk-off, three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth. RHP Johan Yan (0-2) was tagged with the loss, while RHP Marco Duarte, who escaped unscathed out of a jam in the top of the eighth, got the win for Asheville.
