Sox fall to Rainiers in 18-13 slugfest

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox dropped the series finale to the Tacoma Rainiers 18-13 Wednesday in front of 6,056 fans at Security Service Field.

The Sox lead the game 7-0 after one inning, as the first seven batters reached base. The inning was highlighted by a two-run single by Mike Jacobs and a three-run double by Matt Macri.

The Sox were unable to hold the lead as starter Clayton Mortensen (0-3, 16.97) surrendered seven runs in the top of the second on a solo home run by Mike Wilson and a three-run home run by Alex Liddi. The Sox were able to briefly retake the lead in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single by Willy Taveras to make it 8-7.

Tacoma would score the next ten runs in the game, eventually taking a 17-8 lead in the fifth inning. Johan Limonta (two-run), Liddi (solo) and Matt Tuiasosopo (three-run) each hit home runs over the three inning stretch which gave the Rainiers the lead for good.

The Sox would tack on two runs in the fifth on an RBI single by Eric Young Jr. and an RBI double by Jacobs. Young Jr. would finish 3-fo-5 with a run scored and an RBI while Jacobs finished 2-for-6 with three RBI in the losing effort.

Wilson and Liddi each finished with two home runs apiece for the Rainiers.

Nate Robertson (3-2, 6.21) picked up the win for the Rainiers who improved to 43-44 while the Sky Sox fall to 37-49.

The Sox start a four-game series tomorrow with the Salt Lake Bees. Greg Reynolds (4-2, 6.83) takes the hill for the Sox against Bear Bay (6-4, 4..93). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM MT.
