New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
Matt Dominguez hit a walk-off home run with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning to complete a comeback from a five-run deficit as the New Orleans Zephyrs overcame the Iowa Cubs 7-6 on Thursday night.
It was the 12th walk-off home run in Zephyr Field history, and the first since Donnie Murphy did so against Oklahoma City on May 28, 2010.
Iowa starter Chris Rusin was welcomed to Triple-A by allowing a leadoff home run to Tim Torres, but settled down over the next four innings, as Iowa rode a pair of three-run homers from Brad Snyder and Bryan LaHair to a 6-1 lead.
The home run by LaHair was his league-leading 25th of the year.
The Zephyrs scored four times in the fifth, as Jesus Merchan and Jorge Padilla led off with singles. Brad Davis then doubled to score Merchan, but Padilla was thrown out at the plate.
Pinch-hitter Ryan Klosterman singled, and Tim Torres doubled to score Davis and Klosterman to make it a 6-3 ballgame.
After Ozzie Martinez grounded out, Vinny Rottino doubled over the head of center fielder Lou Montanez to cut the lead to one.
The Zephyrs tied the game in the eighth on consecutive singles by Mike Cervenak, Dominguez and Merchan.
The New Orleans bullpen took over for Koehler and hurled five scoreless innings after Koehler gave up six runs on five hits in five innings.
After Iowa reliever Blake Parker set down the first two batters in the bottom of the 10th, Dominguez blasted a 0-1 pitch deep over the fence in left-center, giving the Zephyrs their fourth walk-off victory of the season, and second of the homestand.
Mariano Gomez (1-3) got the victory after tossing a scoreless inning.
Blake Parker (2-2) took the loss for the Cubs.
New Orleans returns to action Friday night at 7 p.m. as Sean West (2-5) takes the mound for the Z's. Jay Jackson (4-7) will take the mound for the Cubs.
