Iowa Cubs News Release
Oklahoma City, OK - The Oklahoma City RedHawks (37-50) blanked the Iowa Cubs (41-46) for eight innings and hung on to win 3-2 at RedHawks Field tonight. The win completed a three-game series sweep for the RedHawks with all three victories coming by just one run. It's the first time the Cubs have been swept in a series this season.
The RedHawks took the early lead with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, Luis Durango reached on a bunt hit and scored on a triple by J.B. Shuck. Colin DeLome followed with a single to drive in Shuck. Those were the only two runs allowed by Cubs' starter Nick Struck (0-1). The right-hander worked 5.1 innings and struck out four in his triple-A debut. He came out of the game with the bases loaded in the sixth inning, but Justin Berg got Wladimir Sutil to ground into an inning-ending double play.
Scott Maine pitched the final two innings for the Cubs and allowed an unearned run in the eighth. Robinson Cancel led off with a single and went to second on an error by Ty Wright in left field. It was the Cubsâ first error in seven games. Koby Clemens followed with a double inside the bag at third to drive in Cancel. Maine got out of the inning by getting a popout in between two strikeouts.
RedHawks' starter Andy Van Hekken (3-4) blanked the Cubs through six innings. He allowed six hits, including three doubles, but the Cubs stranded eight runners in the first six frames. Ross Wolf followed with two perfect innings in relief to set up Casey Fien for the save in the ninth.
In the top of the ninth, Scott Moore ripped a one-out single and Bryan LaHair came off the bench with two outs to launch a two-run homer that ruined the shutout. It was LaHair's league-leading 24th home run of the season. Fien recovered to strike out Lou Montanez to end the game and earn his third save.
The Cubs move on to New Orleans to start a new four-game series tomorrow night at 7:00. LH Chris Rusin will start for the Cubs in his Triple-A debut against RH Tom Koehler (5-6, 5.24) for the Zephyrs. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the Safeco On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:40 p.m.
