Express Lose Series Finale At Albuquerque 11-3

Albuquerque, N.M. - Jerry Sands went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and five RBI with his second home run in as many nights to help lead the Albuquerque Isotopes past the Round Rock Express 11-3 in Pacific Coast League Action Wednesday night at Isotopes Park. The Express (50-36) now hold a five game advantage over the Isotopes (45-41) in the division.

Dana Eveland started the game for the Isotopes and pitched 8.0 innings while allowing two runs - one earned - on fives hits with one walk and seven strike outs. Eveland (8-5) did not allow a run until the eighth inning and got the win.

Dee Gordon led off the bottom of the first with a triple and scored, along with Russell Mitchell who walked following Gordon, on Sands' two-RBI double to center field. Sands scored later in the inning on a passed ball by Robinzon Diaz.

The Isotopes added two more runs in the second inning on Mitchell's sacrifice fly and Sands' solo home run, and pushed the score to 5-0. They made the score 6-0 on Sands' RBI-single in the fourth inning.

Albuquerque broke the game open in the fifth inning with five runs, pushing their lead to 11 runs. JD Closser, Justin Sellers, Gordon and Sands all had at least one RBI in the inning.

The Express got on the board in the eighth inning on Julio Borbon's RBI triple scoring Robinzon Diaz. Borbon then scored on Omar Quintanilla's RBI single. They added one more run in the ninth when Joey Butler scored on Matt Kata's groundout. Butler doubled to get on and moved to third on a wild pitch.

Express starter Derek Hankins went 2.0 innings, allowing five runs - four earned - on fives hits while walking three. Hankins (5-6) got the loss and is now winless in his last nine appearances after recording five wins in his first seven.

Seth McClung relieved Hankins and allowed six runs - four earned - on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts in 3.0 innings of work. Mark Hamburger, Zach Phillips and Pedro Strop combined for three shutout innings.

The Express return to The Dell Diamond for a four-game series against the Memphis Redbirds, with the first game Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. CDT. This is the final series before the All-Star break. Right-hander Eric Hurley (1-0, 5.49 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for the Express, while right-hander P.J. Walter (7-4, 4.25 ERA) will get the nod for Memphis.
