South Carolina Agrees to Terms with Daniel New
October 22, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
South Carolina Stingrays News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC- The South Carolina Stingrays, proud affiliate of the Washington Capitals, have announced the signing of defenseman Daniel New to a standard player contract today. New joins the roster in time for opening night, as the Rays begin the 2015-16 season by taking on the Greenville Swamp Rabbits Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
New joins the Stingrays after spending the 2015-16 season with the Springfield Falcons in the American Hockey League (AHL), Florida Everblades in the ECHL and Graz EC in Austria. Earlier in his professional career the defenseman suited up for the AHL's Binghamton Senators and the Elmira Jackals in the ECHL.
"Obviously we were looking for a defenseman when Leach went up and I had been talking to Danny throughout the summer," said Stingrays head coach Ryan Warsofsky. "Luckily we came to an agreement and we're excited to have Danny. He's a puck-moving defenseman who I believe is very elite at this level and has some AHL and ECHL experience. We'll look to him on the back end to play some big minutes. I think this is a place where he can succeed in our system with the way we want to play defense and he'll be a big piece of the puzzle."
The 27-year-old enjoyed a four-year collegiate career with Providence College from 2008-2012 before making the jump to professional hockey.
"I'm excited," New said. "South Carolina was always a spot I kind of had in my head that I would love to come play for and coach Warsofsky reached out to me and I was just excited to sign, get things going. I was kind of waiting around for something to happen so I'm looking forward to it.
The six-foot-1, 195-pound blueliner played 128 collegiate games with the Friars and finished with 39 points (eight goals, 31 assists). Most recently, New played 18 games with Springfield (four assists), five games with the Everblades (one goal, three assists) and four games with Graz EC.
2016-17 Season Ticket Packages are on sale now featuring discounted pricing and great benefits! The club's new 7 Game Plan features tickets to all the biggest games plus added benefits! For more information, fans may call the Stingrays' offices at 843-744-2248 or visit StingraysHockey.com .
