Last time out

In a back and forth game, the Jackals topped the Norfolk Admirals, 3-2, in front of 3,510 fans at First Arena in the team's home opener.

Tyson Fawcett, making his Jackals debut, gave Elmira a 1-0 lead at 5:14 with a power-play goal. He lifted a shot past Connor Knapp on a feed from Kyle Rankin to give the Jackals a first-period lead. The Admirals finally got on the board in the second, with a pair of goals just over a minute apart to go ahead, 2-1, for their first lead of the season. The Jackals pulled even a few minutes later when Paul Geiger, also making his Jackals debut, snapped home a left circle shot with 1:19 to go in the second.

The game remained tied at two deep into the third period until Daultan Leveille tipped in a shot from Davis Vandane with 5:22 left in regulation, putting the Jackals up 3-2. Goaltender John Muse shut the door the rest of the way to preserve the Jackals win.

Scouting the Admirals

The Admirals are still searching for their first win in the 2016-17 campaign. They dropped a two-game set to the Kalamazoo Wings at the Norfolk Scope last week before falling to Greenville and the Jackals this week. They have been shut out twice and outscored 11-3 overall to start the year.

The Admirals have three different goal scorers through four games. Captain Josh Brittain scored in the season opener and Mike Krieg and Mike Seidel scored last night against the Jackals. No player has more than one point.

In goal, Eetu Laurikainen started the first two games for the Admirals before being recalled by the AHL's Bakersfield Condors in the middle of the week. He was reassigned to Norfolk ahead of last night's game, but served as the backup. Connor Knapp, a sixth-round draft pick by the Buffalo Sabres in 2009, has started the last two games, losing both while allowing five goals.

Head-to-head

The Jackals and Admirals will meet nine times in the 2016-17 regular season, with five games at First Arena and four games at the Norfolk Scope. After this two-game weekend set, they don't meet again until Dec. 30 in Elmira.

Last season the teams split eight head-to-head matches, with the Admirals winning three of the five in Elmira. The Jackals finished with one more point head-to-head because of an overtime loss.

Among returning players, Steven Whitney led the Admirals in scoring against the Jackals in 2015-16, posting five points (3g, 2a) in six games. Defenseman Gabriel Verpaelst also had five points (1g, 4a) in seven games against the Jackals. Only one healthy player, Guy Leboeuf, appeared in a game with the Jackals against the Admirals last season.

Special teams

The Admirals are without a power-play goal through the first four games of the season. After going 0-for-4 in last night's loss to Elmira, the Admirals' power play now sits at 0-for-15. They are one of nine teams who haven't lit the lamp on the power play yet in 2016-17, but they have had the third most opportunities among those teams.

The Jackals power play has goals in each of the first two games, going 1-for-4 last night. Three of their five goals on the season have been scored with the man advantage as they are 3-for-12 (25.0%) on the season, which ranks sixth in the ECHL.

The Admirals penalty kill started the season 11-for-11 in their first two games, but has now allowed a goal in back-to-back games. The Ads are now 16-for-18 (88.9%) on the penalty kill, ranking 12th in the ECHL.

Elmira's penalty kill got back on course last night, successfully killing all four Norfolk power plays. That was after allowing two power-play goals against Reading in the season opener. The Jackals PK is 20th in the ECHL at 75.0%.
