SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The South Bend Silver Hawks came back to beat the TinCaps, 3-2, Thursday at Coveleski Stadium. Tommy Medica ripped an RBI double in a 2-for-4 performance.
The loss was Fort Wayne's sixth in a row.
The TinCaps took the lead in the top of the first. Jake Blackwood took a two-out walk and Medica followed with a double into the left-field corner to give Fort Wayne a 1-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the fourth, Yazy Arbelo doubled to left-center, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Matt Helm's groundout to tie the game at 1-1.
Fort Wayne retook the lead in the top of the sixth. Oscar Garcia reached on a walk, was balked to second and later scored on a single to center by Emmanuel Quiles.
The Silver Hawks took the lead for good in the bottom of the eighth. Zach Walters drew a leadoff walk, then two batters later Helm singled to right to put runners at the corners. A wild pitch brought Walters home with the tying run. An error on a ground ball put two on with one out, then Raywilly Gomez singled home the go-ahead run to make it 3-2 South Bend. After an intentional walk, the next two batters were retired to limit the damage.
The TinCaps threatened in the top of the ninth. B.J. Guinn reached on his second bunt single of the game but was caught stealing second base. On the next pitch, Wes Cunningham drew a walk to put the tying run back on base, but a strikeout ended the game.
South Bend RHP Brian Budrow (1-0) received the win in relief; RHP Jeremy Erben notched his first save. Fort Wayne RHP Yefri Carvajal (0-1) absorbed the loss.
The TinCaps fell to 6-9; the Silver Hawks upped their record to 4-10.
The TinCaps and South Bend Silver Hawks (Class-A Arizona Diamondbacks) continue their three- game series Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Coveleski Stadium. Fort Wayne RHP Matt Branham (1-0) takes the ball against Silver Hawks RHP Bradin Hagens (0-1).
