Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL - Rain continued to play a factor on the 2011 season Thursday night as the Peoria Chiefs defeated the Beloit Snappers 5-4 in a shortened contest. In the bottom of the seventh inning, the groundscrew brought the tarp onto the field and the game was officially called following a 44-minute delay. The Chiefs are now 7-7 on the year and 2-2 at home with two games left on the homestand.
Peoria took an early 3-0 lead in the second inning with a two-out triple from Arismendy Alcantara. Micah Gibbs led off the inning with a base hit into right field before Elliot Soto singled to center. D.J. Fitzgerald then drew a walk to load the bases for Alcantara, who ripped his first triple of the season into the left-center field gap that scored three runs. As rain started to fall on the ballpark, Alcantara began right where he left off with his second at-bat of the game. In the bottom of the fourth and Fitzgerald on second base, the Chiefs' shortstop singled into right field for his fourth RBI of the game to put Peoria ahead 4-0 against B.J. Hermsen.
Beloit would not be kept quiet however as the Snappers responded with four runs of their own in the top half of the fifth. Beloit began the inning with four straight hits that included back- to-back singles from Tobias Streich and Wang-Wei Lin, followed by a RBI double from Andrew Leer to put the Snappers on the scoreboard for the first time. Leer was the final batter that starter Robinson Lopez faced as Peoria brought Eric Jokisch into the game with no outs and two runners to scoring position. The first hitter Jokisch faced was Daniel Santana, who planted a two- run triple in right-center field that pulled Beloit to within one run. Two hitters later, Lance Ray brought the tying run across home plate with a RBI groundout that scored Santana from third.
Peoria took advantage of a couple errors in its half of the fifth to regain the lead, 5-4. Pierre Lepage reached first base to lead of the inning courtesy of a fielding error by Snappers' second baseman Gunner Glad. Lepage moved to second on his first stolen base of the year and advanced to third on a throwing error by Santana. With two outs in the inning, Elliot Soto came to the plate and knocked a RBI single down the right field line that scored Lepage for the final run of the game.
The heavy rain held off for the most part until the bottom of the seventh with two out. During Sergio Burruel's fourth at-bat of the game, the skies opened up causing the umpire to call for the tarp that all but ended the game. The rain never let up and the game was officially called after a 44-minute delay.
Eric Jokisch (2-0) received the win for Peoria allowing one hit on one run through two innings pitched. Lopez allowed three runs on four hits through four innings of work with two walks and a strikeout. Jeff Antigua entered late in the game and did not allow a run or hit in one inning earning a save.
Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Arismendy Alcantara (SS) - The Chiefs' infielder recorded a career-high four RBI increasing his total to eight RBI on the season. A day after bringing the only run across the plate in Peoria's 1-0 win at Quad Cities, Alcantara went 2-3 including his first triple of the season.
