Kane County Cougars News Release

GENEVA, Ill. - The Kane County Cougars knocked out eight runs on 13 hits Thursday night and recovered from a pair of early deficits to roll past the Clinton LumberKings, 8-4, at Elfstrom Stadium. Every Cougars starter had at least one hit or one RBI, and four players collected multiple hits, as the Cougars claimed the opener of a three-game series and moved to 2-2 on their six-game homestand.

Clinton managed a run in the top of the second against Keaton Hayenga, but the Cougars answered in the bottom half when Gerard Hall doubled home Geulin Beltre. The LumberKings went ahead, 4-1, with a three-run fourth off Hayenga, but those turned out to be their final tallies. Hayenga gave up four runs on six hits over five innings in a no-decision.

The Cougars rallied in the fifth inning against Seon Gi Kim to tie the game. Brian Fletcher was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Lane Adams notched a sacrifice fly and Murray Watts nailed a two-out RBI single to make it 4-4. Then in the sixth, again with two outs, the Cougars took the lead. Fletcher poked a two-run single off Fray Martinez (0-1) to score Ryan Jenkins and Hall, and Ryan Stovall and Alex Llanos added RBI connections in the seventh for the 8-4 final. Dusty Odenbach (1-1) got the win with two shutout innings and four strikeouts, and Chase Boruff logged two scoreless innings and also fanned four.

The Cougars (6-9) and LumberKings (4-11) play Game 2 of the three-game set Friday night at 6 CT. Crawford Simmons (0-2, 6.75) is scheduled to oppose Forrest Snow (0-1, 3.86). The game will be broadcast on WBIG 1280-AM and online via kccougars.com with pregame coverage starting at 5:45 p.m.
