South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - The South Bend Silver Hawks scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally for a 3-2 victory over the Fort Wayne TinCaps in the series opener at Coveleski Stadium on Friday night. Raywilly Gomez drove home the go ahead run to give the Hawks their fourth win of the season.
Before yesterday's come-from-behind win in game one at Great Lakes, the Hawks were 0-8 when their opponents plated the first run of the game. After tonight's late comeback, South Bend has now won on consecutive days when playing from behind as the team is quickly shaking off a slow start to the 2011 season.
Down 2-1 in the bottom of the eighth, Zach Walters walked to start the late rally against Fort Wayne reliever Yefri Carvajal (LP, 0-1). One out later, Matt Helm connected on a single to right to put runners at the corners with only one out. A wild pitch from Carvajal brought Walters home and tied the game at 2-2.
After an error allowed Keon Broxton to reach and put runners at first and second, Gomez laced a single to left field. Manager Mark Haley never hesitated in waving the runner around third, and Helm crossed the plate as the throw in from left was way off line to give the Silver Hawks their first and only lead of the game.
Gomez also helped in the top of the ninth, throwing out B.J. Guinn on a stolen base attempt at second to help Jeremy Erben (SV, 1) record his first save of the season.
Patrick Schuster (ND) turned in another solid outing on the mound, allowing just two runs over 5.2 innings. Reliever Brian Budrow (WP, 1-0) allowed an inherited runner to score, but turned in 2.1 scoreless relief innings to earn his first victory of the year.
The TinCaps had RBI hits from Tommy Medica and Emmanuel Quiles, but blew the game late for their sixth straight loss.
Helm had an early RBI for the Hawks, plating Yazy Arbelo in the bottom of the fourth as the team's only run against Fort Wayne starter Zach Cates (ND). Keon Broxton has two hits and two stolen bases as well.
The Silver Hawks and TinCaps continue the three game set on Friday evening at 6:30 PM Eastern Time. The pitching matchup will feature RHP Bradin Hagens (0-1, 5.87 ERA) for South Bend and RHP Matt Branham (1-0, 1.08 ERA) for Fort Wayne. Pregame coverage begins at 6:10 PM Eastern Time on www.sportsjuice.com and www.silverhawks.com.
