Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Despite scoring first, the River Bandits dropped the opener of a three-game series with the Cedar Rapids Kernels 4-3.
The Bandits wasted no time plating a run in the top of the first inning on an RBI double by Greg Garcia that scored Michael Swinson. The Kernels responded with runs in each of the next two frames. They led the rest of the way.
Already leading 2-1, the Kernels provided some much-needed insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth when David Harris hit a two-run homer to give Cedar Rapids all they would need. Quad Cities chipped away with single tallies in the seventh and ninth innings but still fell short in the opener of a six-game road trip.
The River Bandits scattered seven hits in the game by seven different players. Freddy Parejo hit his first home run of the season with a solo shot in the seventh. Garcia and Victor Sanchez each doubled in the game.
Right-hander Jordan Swagerty (1-1) allowed four runs on six hits over six innings in his first loss of the season. The River Bandits were able to get only one unearned run against Kernels starter Brian Diemer (1-1) as he picked up his first win of the season. Caleb Graham (1) worked the final two innings for Cedar Rapids to pick up his first save of the year.
The series continues on Friday at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The River Bandits will send right-hander Seth Blair (0-1, 3.86) against Kernels righty Heath Nichols (0-1, 7.71). First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
