SAN PEDRO SULA, HONDURAS - In the club's first competitive action of the 2020 campaign, Sounders FC drew 2-2 with Honduran side CD Olimpia in the first leg of its Round of 16 matchup in the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League at Estadio Olimpico. New Designated Player João Paulo scored a sixth-minute goal in his Seattle debut, while Jordan Morris recorded a goal and assist as the Rave Green built a 2-0 lead before the home side rallied back to force the draw. Brian Schmetzer's club now travels home to Seattle for the return leg next Thursday, February 27 at CenturyLink Field (7:00 p.m. PT / FS2).
It took just six minutes for João Paulo to score his first goal in a Sounders FC uniform, heading in a cross from Morris after a Joevin Jones ball down the left flank. The Brazilian was making his Sounders FC debut after signing with the club as a Designated Player on January 31 following an extensive career in his home country.
The score remained 1-0 until early in the second half, when Morris made it 2-0 on another play ignited by Jones. The Trinidad & Tobago native fired a shot from the top of the area that forced the goalkeeper into a sprawling save, and Morris pounced on the rebound for his first goal of 2020.
The home side came back to force the 2-2 draw with a pair late goals from forward Yustin Arboleda. The first came in the 63rd minute, with Christian Maidana dribbling through the Seattle defense from the right side of the 18-yard-box and sending a cross that was deflected into goal by Arboleda. The Colombian completed his brace in the 81st minute, heading in a looping cross from Jorge Benguche.
In addition to João Paulo, defender Yeimar Gómez Andrade made his Sounders FC debut, starting in central defense alongside Xavier Arreaga. Fellow offseason signing Shane O'Neill also made his first appearance for the Rave Green when he came on as a substitute for Jones in the 69th minute.
Following next Thursday's second leg at CenturyLink Field (7:00 p.m. PT / FS2), the Rave Green begin MLS regular season action on Sunday, March 1 vs. Chicago Fire FC at CenturyLink Field (12:00 p.m. PT / ESPN, 950 KJR AM).
