Sound Tigers to host Pink Rink Night for breast cancer awareness

Bridgeport, Conn. (October 24, 2007) - The Bridgeport Sound Tigers and the American Cancer Society are teaming up to ice breast cancer with "Pink Rink Night," Sunday, Nov. 4.

The Sound Tigers are selling discounted tickets at $15 up until Oct. 29 for their 4 p.m. game against the Norfolk Admirals at Arena at Harbor Yard, in Bridgeport. Proceeds from the ticket sales will benefit the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, a noncompetitive five-kilometer walk to raise awareness and funds for lifesaving research and patient support services.

"Cancer touches people in so many different ways, whether it is a family member or friend," Sound Tigers' president Howard Saffan said. It is an honor and a privilege to join efforts with such an incredible organization like Making Strides against Breast Caner to help put an end to this terrible disease."

Sound Tiger players will have their sticks wrapped in pink tape to show their support for breast cancer survivors and their caregivers. Other features of the event include a special "Survivors' Skate" for breast cancer survivors and their friends and family, a Pink Stick auction and Chuck-A-Puck competition, with the proceeds going to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, a mini-concert by local singer/songwriter Amanda Kaletsky, and a post-game autograph session with Sound Tiger players.

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among American women excluding skin cancers. The American Cancer Society estimates that breast cancer will strike more than 178,480 women and 2,030 men this year, including more than 2,510 people in Connecticut. An estimated 40,910 will die from breast cancer this year, including 490 Connecticut residents.

The American Cancer Society currently funds 202 breast cancer research grants across the nation, totaling more than $109 million. Grants are active at many notable institutions, including Yale University in New Haven. The Society also offers cancer patients free wigs, free rides to-and-from treatment, a one-on-one support group for breast cancer patients, and free cosmetology classes for patients undergoing radiation and chemotherapy treatment.
