Sound Tigers Bedeviled In Lowell

Once again the Sound Tigers were not able to stay out of the penalty box, with three penalties in the third period, to help the Lowell Devils' comeback victory over Sound Tigers, 4-3.
Early in the first period, the Sound Tigers went on a two-man advantage and Steve Regier gave the Sound Tigers the 1-0 lead. Jeff Tambellini took a shot on net that was turned aside by Devils' goalie, Frank Doyle. The puck bounced behind the goal where Ben Walter fed a centering pass to Regier for the quick tap in under Doyle for his second tally this season. Joey MacDonald, back in net for the Sound Tigers, made a big save at the eight minute mark when he stopped a point shot that was deflected by Lowell forward, Ivan Khomutov. MacDonald was prepared for the shot to come high and had to adjust to the tip that ended up low to his right pad.
At 2:36 of the second period, Devils' Khomutov would take a hooking penalty and the Sound Tigers would make Lowell pay with a goal, 3:01 into the middle frame. Walter took a pass from Sean Bentivoglio down in the left corner and slowly walked the puck to the side of the net. Timing it perfectly, Walter floated a pass over the stick of Doyle to a pinching Jamie Fraser who one-timed his first goal of the season into the net, giving the Sound Tigers the 2-0 lead. Halfway through the period, Noah Clarke had a breakaway but lost the puck when MacDonald tried to poke-check Clarke, but lost his stick. Referee Francois St. Laurent awarded Clarke a penalty shot, calling MacDonald for throwing his stick. MacDonald was not flustered by the call and made a big blocker save, keeping Lowell off the board. The Devils would finally break MacDonald's shutout bid at 12:09 when Benoit Mondou won a face-off back to defenseman, Jean-Luc Grand-Pierre who wired a shot through MacDonald for his first goal of the season making the score 2-1 heading into the final period.
In the third, Lowell evened the score at 2-2 when the Sound Tigers turned the puck over behind MacDonald. Devils' left wing Clarke stole the puck and wrapped it inside the post for his second goal of the season at 3:13 of the final frame. The Devils did not waste much time taking their first lead of the game just a minute and 15 seconds later. Mondou finished a rebound off a Mark Fraser point shot, to make the score 3-2 in favor of the Devils. Khomutov had the second assist on the Mondou's first goal of the season. With the Sound Tigers down two men with about nine minutes remaining in the period, the Devils received a power-play goal from Patrick Davis, his first of the season, assisted by Mondou and Olli Malmivaara making the score 4-2. Sound Tigers' captain, Mark Wotton, would trim Lowell's lead to 4-3 when he wristed a point shot that found its way through Doyle. Frans Nielsen and Tambellini assisted on the goal at 12:16. With the Devils clamping down with their defensive system, they were able to keep the Sound Tigers' scoring chances in the final minutes to a minimum and held on for the 4-3 victory.
MacDonald finished with 29 saves on 33 shots and Doyle had 18 saves on 21 Sound Tiger shots. The Sound Tigers were two for three on the power-play and five for six on the penalty kill.
