Bridgeport Islanders News Release

BRIDGEPORT, CT - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, have introduced a number of new youth programs, including a high school journalist competition, the "Youth Hockey All-Star of the Month" and "Blades For Grades".

The Sound Tigers high school journalist competition will give aspiring writers the opportunity to cover Sound Tigers home games at Bridgeport's Arena at Harbor Yard. Students chosen to participate in the program will be seated in the press box, given game notes and statistics and have a chance to talk with players and coaches then write an article about the game. Interested students should submit an essay of no greater than 200 words explaining why he or she would be a good candidate for the position. The application must include a cover page with the following information: name of applicant, date, grade, school name, favorite hockey team, favorite school subject, email of applicant or parent / legal guardian, signature of applicant and signature of parent / legal guardian. Applications should be mailed to the Sound Tigers office at 600 Main Street, Bridgeport CT 06604. Winners will be published at www.soundtigers.com.

The "Youth Hockey All-Star of the Month" program recognizes the effort, sportsmanship and athletic accomplishments of young athletes. Each month, the Sound Tigers will select one youth hockey player who stands out amongst his or her peers to be "Youth Hockey All-Star of the Month". Coaches are encouraged to submit a short recommendation with a player's specific achievements to the Sound Tigers office. Featured players will have their name and profile published at www.soundtigers.com.

"Blades for Grades" emphasizes the Sound Tigers' commitment to area schools by rewarding academic achievement. Students who receive straight A's will be eligible to receive a voucher good for one free ticket to a Sound Tigers home game, based on availability. Students should present or send a copy of their report card and a completed "Blades For Grades" application to the Sound Tigers office to receive one voucher per report card. Applications will be accepted up to four weeks after the end of the semester in which the straight A's are earned.

"Youth Hockey All-Star of the Month" and "Blades For Grades" nominees can be submitted either by mail to the Sound Tigers office or by email to info@soundtigers.com. Information about all three programs is available by calling the Sound Tigers at 203-334-GOAL.

The Sound Tigers will finish a season-opening stretch of four straight road games when they visit the Binghamton Senators this Saturday at 7:05 p.m. They will open the home portion of the schedule next Saturday and Sunday, October 22nd and 23rd when they host the Portland Pirates and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at Bridgeport's Arena at Harbor Yard.
