Sound Tigers Shutout Again
October 30, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Bridgeport Islanders News Release
WILKES-BARRE, PA - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, were shutout for the third straight game, all on the road, losing 1-0 to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins Saturday in a rematch of last spring's East Division semi-final, which the Sound Tigers lost in seven games.
The teams zipped through a scoreless first period that was punctuated by Graham Belak - Mike Sgroi heavyweight fight early in the frame and a pair of flurries in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton slot with Penguins Goaltender Andy Chiodo making several big saves as the Sound Tigers came out with a strong opening 20 minutes of play.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton took the lead on a power-play goal by Michel Ouellet, his fifth marker of the season, 5:50 into the second period off assists from Ramzi Abid and Kris Beech. Ouellet pounced on a loose puck on the play and blasted a one-timer past Sound Tigers Netminder Dieter Kochan, who had matched Chiodo's effort with several big saves of his own up to that point.
The Sound Tigers threw everything they had at the Penguins outshooting them 9-2 in the third period and 26-15 in the game, but Chiodo came up with another huge save with just under three minutes left to play as he snared a Barrett Heisten wrist shot. The Sound Tigers then tried to pull Kochan in favor of an extra attacker but could not control the puck long enough to do so.
Chido was the first star of the game with 26 saves, Ouellet was the second star with the only goal of the contest, and Chris Kelleher was the third star on defense for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. The Penguins were 1 for 6 on the power play and 7 for 7 on the penalty kill.
The Sound Tigers will finish a stretch of five straight road games when they visit the Hartford Wolf Pack next Saturday, November 6th at 7:05 p.m. and the Portland Pirates next Sunday, November 7th at 4:05 p.m. The Sound Tigers' next home game at Bridgeport's Arena at Harbor Yard will be Saturday, November 13th when they host the Norfolk Admirals at 7:05 p.m. All three games will be broadcast live on 600 WICC-AM and at www.soundtigers.com.
