Penguins sign LW Mike Sgroi to PTO

Wilkes-Barre, Pa. – The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins today signed forward Mike Sgroi to a 25-game professional try-out contract. The announcement was made by Penguins' CEO Jeff Barrett.

Sgroi, 26, appeared in one game this season with the Wheeling Nailers (ECHL), recording one assist and five penalty minutes.

The 6'5", 235-pound native of Toronto, Ontario spent the majority of last season with the AHL's Utah Grizzlies. In 45 games with the Grizzlies, he recorded six points (2+4) and 152 penalty minutes. He also appeared in 12 games with the Idaho Steelheads, the Grizzlies' ECHL affiliate, recording one goal and 32 penalty minutes. Sgroi was assigned to the Steelheads on March 12. At the time of his assignment, he led Utah in penalty minutes.

During his five-year pro career, he has spent time in the AHL, ECHL and UHL. In 75 career AHL games with Utah and Chicago, he has recorded seven points (3+4) and 218 penalty minutes.

Sgroi is expected to be in the lineup tonight when the Penguins (2-4-1-1, six points) host the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (4-4-0-0). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
