Grand Rapids, Mich. – The Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League on Saturday signed left wing Ryan Barnes to a professional tryout.

Barnes, 24, played the last two seasons with the Griffins, contributing 30 points (11-19—30) and 326 PIM in 142 games from 2002-04. In 69 games last season, he notched 19 points (6-13—19) and tied for the team lead with 175 PIM. Barnes also made his NHL debut with the Red Wings in 2003-04, going scoreless in two games.

After attending training camp with the Griffins this season, Barnes signed with UHL Kalamazoo. In five games with the Wings, he sports three points (1-2—3) and two penalty minutes.

With Peter Vandermeer serving the back end of a two-game AHL suspension, Barnes will be in the Griffins' lineup tonight when they host the San Antonio Rampage at 7:30. In celebration of Halloween, the Griffins will wear special orange and black jerseys that will be offered to fans in a post-game auction to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters.
