Springfield Falcons News Release
Springfield, Mass. â The Springfield Falcons were downed, 4-2, by the Manchester Monarchs at the Springfield Civic Center on Saturday. Forwards Ryan Craig and Nick Tarnasky provided the scoring for Springfield. Former Falcon Brad Smyth posted a goal and two assists and center Michael Cammalleri registered three helpers for the Monarchs. Manchester improved its record to 6-0 with the win.
The Monarchs capitalized on their first power play of the game when center Yanick Lehoux stepped out from behind the goal line to collect and then bury the rebound of a shot from Cammalleri 2:52 into the game. Manchester entered the game with the leading American Hockey League's leading power play with a success rate of 27.5%. The goal was Lehoux's team-leading eighth of the season.
Second-year pro Noah Clarke skated to the left post to redirect a feed from Cammalleri to make the score 2-0 at the 9:47 mark.
However, the Falcons responded 26 seconds later when Craig got open in the slot to one-time a centering pass from below the goal line by Craig Darby. Right wing Shane Willis also assisted as the trio combined on a goal for the second consecutive night.
The Monarchs regained a two-goal early in the third period with a shorthanded goal by left wing Jeff Giuliano. Eklund made an initial save on a partial breakaway by Manchester forward Dan Welch, but the netminder could not locate the rebound and Giuliano poked it in for his second goal of the season at 3:50.
Smyth snapped a wrist shot from the right wing face-off circle past Eklund after receiving a pass out of the corner from Cammalleri to make the score 4-1 at 6:01 of the middle frame.
With 1:27 left in the game, Tarnasky knocked in a loose puck during a scramble in front of the Monarchs' net for his second goal of his rookie season.
The Monarchs recorded a 31-28 shot advantage in the game.
Eklund made 27 saves in the Falcons' net while Manchester goaltender Adam Hauser stopped 26 of 28 shots.
Springfield limited Manchester to one goal in six power-play chances, but were unable to convert any of their own five opportunities with man advantage.
