Baumgartner lifts Moose to OT win
October 30, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manitoba Moose News Release
Nolan Baumgartner scored a powerplay goal 23 seconds into overtime as the Manitoba Moose defeated the Rochester Americans by a score of 3-2 in American Hockey League action Wednesday night.
The game didn't start so well for the Moose as the Amerks were looking to avenge a 7-2 defeat from exactly two weeks ago when the Moose rolled into town and blew out the hosts on the evening of their home opener.
Rochester fired 19 shots on Moose netminder Wade Flaherty but the Moose goaltender stood tall and turned all 19 shots away.
One highlight of the opening frame was a fight between Lee Goren and Doug Janik. It was Goren's second fight of the season.
After one period of play, shots were 19-12 in favour of the Americans.
It didn't take Rochester long to strike in the second. 3:14 in, Nathan Paetsch scored to make it a 1-0 game. The puck squirted out to Paetsch in the slot, who ripped it by a screen Flaherty.
Less than three minutes later, rookie Thomas Vanek one-timed a quick pass from Derek Roy into the back of the net to make it 2-0 Amerks.
Before the second period would end, the Moose scored a critical marker. Peter Sarno picked up a loose puck that bounced around the zone. Sarno's shot beat Ryan Miller clean as the game was 2-1 Rochester going into the second intermission.
Manitoba was then able to tie things up early in the third. At the 5:49 mark, Jason King and Sarno came in on a two-on-one. Sarno fed a nice saucer pass over to King, who one-timed it in behind Miller.
Near the end of the third with the game tied, Rochester had a clear scoring opportunity but Flaherty stood tall and made the key saves when needed.
The result of the play was a scrum that saw two players - namely Kevin Bieksa and Paul Gaustad - square off. What also came out of the scrum was a Manitoba powerplay which they would open the overtime period with.
Manitoba did not make a mistake with the overtime powerplay as captain Nolan Baumgartner one-timed a Kirill Koltsov feed that beat Miller blocker side.
