BRIDGEPORT, CT - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, scored three unanswered, third-period goals for a 3-2, come-from-behind, home win over the division-leading Norfolk Admirals Saturday. It was the Sound Tigers' second win in as many games, as well as their second in a row at home dating back to their last contest in Bridgeport, a 3-2 win over the Binghamton Senators on October 24th.
The teams played scoreless hockey deep into the second period Saturday before Norfolk scored twice on the same major power play to take a 2-0 lead. Mikhail Yakubov opened the scoring with his third goal of the season with 3:07 left in the middle frame off assists from Duncan Keith and Marty Wilford, and Travis Moen made it 2-0 exactly one minute later with his fourth of the year off assists from Captain Ajay Baines and Jason Morgan.
The Admirals actually put themselves shorthanded during the five-minute penalty but killed that advantage before scoring twice after the major power play had resumed. The Sound Tigers' Blaine Down was assessed five minutes for high-sticking at the 13:35 mark, but Baines and Yakubov took minor penalties at 14:14 and 14:24 respectively. As a result, Norfolk was 2 for 4 on the major power play.
Sean Bergenheim, who scored the first goal of the game and the game-winner in last Sunday's 3-1 road win over the Portland Pirates, put the Sound Tigers on the scoreboard with his fourth goal of the season off assists from Captain Richard Seeley and Eric Godard 2:07 into the third period. Bergenheim is now on a two-game goal streak while Godard is on a two-game assist streak. Justin Papineau tied the score at 2-2 with his fourth of the year off assists from Barrett Heisten and Ryan Caldwell 3:20 later. Heisten is now on a three-game assist streak.
Bergenheim pushed home a Godard feed with 33.9 seconds left to play for his team-leading fifth goal of the season to give the Sound Tigers their first lead of the contest, which held up even though the Admirals pulled Goaltender Adam Munro in favor of an extra attacker just after the ensuing face-off. Mapletoft also assisted on the game-winner and is on a two-game assist streak in addition to leading the team with nine helpers and ten points in 12 games this season.
Bergenheim was the first star of the game, Papineau the second and Yakubov the third. Sound Tigers Goaltender Wade Dubielewicz made 34 saves while Munro made 32 as Norfolk had a 36-35 shots on goal advantage. The Admirals were 2 for 6 on the power play while the Sound Tigers were 0 for 2.
The Sound Tigers will host the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins tomorrow at 4:05 p.m. in the first meeting of the teams in Bridgeport since game seven of last spring's East Division semi-final. The Sound Tigers will also host the Providence Bruins this Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. before heading out of town for three straight road games.
