Manchester Monarchs News Release
MANCHESTER, NH â The Manchester Monarchs tied a franchise record for consecutive wins at home with a convincing 5-0 win over the Hershey Bears at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Saturday night. The win was the fifth in a row on home ice for the Monarchs to open the 2004-05 season. With the win, the Monarchs improved to 10-1-0-0 (20 points) on the season and remained in a first place tie with the Hartford Wolf Pack (10-2-0-0, 20 points) at the top of the Atlantic Division. The Wolf Pack edged the Providence Bruins, 3-2, at the Hartford Civic Center on Saturday night.
For the 11th consecutive game, the Monarchs scored the first goal. In Saturday's game, the capacity crowd of 9,916 had barely settled into their seats when right wing Tom Kostopoulos scored to put the Monarchs up 1-0. Kostopoulos, who now has a goal in each of his last three contests, tipped left wing Noah Clarke's center by goaltender Peter Budaj just 59 seconds into the opening period. Center Yanick Lehoux also recorded an assist on the fifth goal of the season for Kostopoulos.
The Monarchs collected their second goal 13 minutes later with veteran right wing Brad Smyth depositing his fifth goal of the season into the Hershey net a split second after securing a pass from left wing Dustin Brown. Center Michael Cammalleri also assisted on the goal.
Brown and Cammalleri extended scoring streaks on the play. Cammalleri now has points in seven straight games (4-8=12) while Brown has registered at least a point in five straight (5-3=8).
The Monarchs added to their lead with second period power play goals from Lehoux and left wing Chris Schmidt. Lehoux patiently slipped his team-leading 10th goal by Budaj from the right side of the crease at 9:13, and Schmidt backhanded home his second goal of the season at 18:03. Cammalleri and defenseman Denis Grebeshkov shared assists on Lehoux's goal, his 40th as a Monarch. Weaver and Lehoux had the assists on Schmidt's tally.
The Monarchs closed the scoring with the second goal of the game for Kostopoulos, pushed home from the left side of the crease 9:39 into the final period. Defenseman Troy Milam and left wing Jeff Giuliano had the assists on the sixth goal of the season for Kostopoulos.
Lehoux finished the night with one goal and two assists, his fourth three-point game in five contests at the Verizon Wireless Arena this season. Kostopoulos chipped in with a pair of goals. He leads the Monarchs with eight multi-point games this season.
