Hamilton Bulldogs News Release

Hamilton, ON - The Hamilton Bulldogs failed to score in their first ever shootout allowing the Binghamton Senators to grab a win on Friday night at Copps Coliseum. Jason Spezza and Denis Hamel scored in the shootout for Binghamton handing Yann Danis his second loss of the season in front of 5,513 strong.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring four minutes into the game on the power play as Corey Locke netted his fifth goal of the season. Defenceman Ron Hainsey faked a point shot that seemed to fool the Binghamton defenders and passed to Locke on the right wing who then buried it high on goalie Billy Thompson.

Late in the opening period, Bulldogs defenceman Dan Focht got called for elbowing and the Senators capitalized. A shot from the point was tipped by Senators forward Brandon Bochenski and landed on the stick of Antoine Vermette who put the puck into a wide open net for his third of the season. The goal came at 19:06 of the first period.

With less than two seconds remaining in the first period, the Bulldogs failed to clear the front of the net and Binghamton forward Denis Hamel banged in a rebound to lift the Senators to a 2-1 lead.

In a penalty-filled second period, the Bulldogs would even the score on a five-on-three power play as Duncan Milroy potted his second goal of the season. Chris Higgins skated into the slot, fired a shot at the Binghamton netminder and Milroy was there to tap in the rebound. The goal came at the 11:44 mark of the second and was the second power-play goal by the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs would take a 3-2 lead in the first half of the third period on a goal by forward Steve Ott. Jason Ward dropped a clever pass through his legs to Ott who then shot it high over the glove of goalie Billy Thompson for his first of the season.

Just a minute and a half later, the Senators tied the game when Jason Spezza skated in on a breakaway and put the puck high past Bulldogs goalie Yann Danis. The goal came at 8:14 of the third period.

The score remained tied for the rest of regulation time and overtime and the teams prepared for a shootout; the first ever for the Bulldogs.

Jason Spezza and Denis Hamel scored in the shootout for Binghamton, which was enough for the win, and the Bulldogs fell to 6-4-3-1 on the season.
