Sound Tigers Outlast Penguins 2-1
December 21, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, CT - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, ousted the Wilkes Barre/Scranton Penguins 2-1 at home Wednesday handing the AHL's top team its first road regulation loss of the season.
"I told the guys that if they worked hard and played to together, they can compete with anyone," head coach Dave Baseggio said. "That's a good team, and they didn't win all those games by accident, so we just proved to ourselves what we're capable of doing."
The first period had both teams getting opportunities, but neither were unable to cash in on their chances. Bruno Gervais had the Sound Tigers best chance of the opening session when he took a feed from Matt Koalska over the blue line for a two-on-one break. As Gervais took his shot, the puck rolled up on his stick and he fired it wide of Penguins goalie Sebastien Caron. New addition to the team, Scott Ford stopped what would have been an easy tap in goal for Rico Fata by tieing up Fata's stick keeping him from scoring off a feed from line-mate Kenny Corupe. Wade Dubielewicz made his best save of the period on Wilkes Barre/Scranton forward, Corupe when he stopped his snap shot in the slot to end the scoreless period.
The middle frame was another scoreless period, but the opportunities were plentiful. Dubielewicz started a rush up ice catching the Penguins in a line change when he saucered a long pass to Cole Jarrett at the opposing blue-line for a breakaway. Jarrett took a slap shot from the left circle that was turned away by Caron. Dubielewicz's best save of the period came when Wilkes Barre/Scranton was on the power-play and forward Jonathan Filewich streaked out of the corner and wristed a low shot that was quickly gloved by Dubielewicz, one of his nine saves in the period.
"It was a fun game to play," Dubielewicz said. "We kept them to the exterior and made them take outside shots."
The third period saw the scoring finally get underway. Jeremy Colliton got the Sound Tigers on the board at 9:59 of the final period on a goal, his eighth of the season, assisted by Robert Nilsson and Bruno Gervais. The assist extended Nilsson's point streak to three games. Colliton drove in from the right circle and tried to send a pass across the crease to Sean Bergenheim that was deflected by Penguins defenseman Ryan Lannon past his own net-minder Caron breaking the scoreless tie.
The Sound Tigers got a second goal when Travis Brigley had a great individual effort to hold off two Wilkes Barre/Scranton defensemen and then send a one-handed pass to Steve Regier, who wristed a shot through the legs of Caron for his seventh goal of the year, giving the Sound Tigers a two goal lead with 4:46 left to play.
"I threw it on net, and Caron didn't see it, but they all count," Regier said. "What matters the most is we beat a really good team."
The Penguins were able to break Dubielewicz's shutout bid when Stephen Dixon scored on a broken play for his fifth goal of the year off an assist from Dennis Bonvie making the score 2-1 Sound Tigers. Dubielewicz held the fort the rest of the way making 26 saves on 27 shots and was named first star of the game, Caron made 21 of 23 saves being named the third star of the game, and Colliton was the second star of the game.
The Sound Tigers played without forwards Jeff Hamilton and Rob Collins who were recalled by the Islanders Wednesday, as well as goaltender Frederic Cloutier who was returned to the ECHL's Pensacola Ice Pilots. However, defenseman Scott Ford made his Sound Tigers debut Wednesday after signing a professional tryout contract earlier in the day. Ford came from the ECHL's Trenton Titans and has also appeared in the AHL with the Providence Bruins this season.
The Sound Tigers will head into the holiday break by hosting the archrival Hartford Wolf Pack this Friday at 7:35 p.m. They will finish a four-game homestand when they host the Springfield Falcons next Wednesday, December 28th at 7:05 p.m. All Sound Tigers games are web-cast live at www.soundtigers.com.
