Binghamton Senators News Release

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Binghamton Senators gave up a franchise record eight goals and 52 shots in an 8-6 loss to the Norfolk Admirals at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena on Wednesday night.

Binghamton held a 3-1 lead before Norfolk scored three straight, including a Milan Bartovic short-handed penalty shot goal, the second such goal Binghamton has allowed this season.

But Binghamton came back to take a 5-4 lead thanks to a high-sticking major penalty assessed to Ajay Baines at 12:32 of the middle period. Defenseman Tomas Malec scored his first goal in a Binghamton sweater with Baines in the box and Joe Cullen scored his second goal of the season less than one minute after the Malec tally.

The next four goals would belong to Norfolk as Matt Keith, James Wisniewski, Martin St. Pierre and Ajay Baines all scored in succession. Joe Cullen's brother, Matt, assisted on two of the goals and received third star honors with three assists in the game.

Norfolk's five goals and 24 shots in the second period also broke Binghamton franchise records. Binghamton had previously allowed four goals in a period eight times. The Sens previous record for shots allowed in a period was 22 in games against Norfolk on April 9, 2004 and against Rochester on Dec. 10, 2005.

Also scoring for Binghamton in the game were Denis Hamel, Danny Bois and Charlie Stephens, who received second star honors for his efforts. Bartovic was named first star.

Billy Thompson started in goal for Binghamton and allowed six goals on 38 Norfolk shots. Kelly Guard stopped 12 of 14 shots in relief. Corey Crawford went the distance in net for Norfolk, stopping 30 of 36 shots.

Despite allowing eight goals, the B-Sens killed four of five penalties in the loss. The Sens power play converted on three of seven attempts.

Binghamton returns to action on Friday night as the Lowell Lock Monsters make their only visit of the season to the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. Santa Claus will be at Friday's game and all fans are invited to have a free picture taken with him.
