Sound Tigers Lose 7-5 In Providence

PROVIDENCE, RI - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, lost 7-5 on the road to the Providence Bruins Friday in a game that saw the teams go a combined 7 for 9 on the power play.

Providence led 3-2 after one period as the teams were a combined 4 for 5 on the power play in the first 20 minutes.

Milan Jurcina opened the scoring for the Bruins with his fifth goal of the season off assists from Pat Leahy and David Gove at the 2:33 mark. Andy Hilbert doubled the to 2-0 3:03 later with his team-leading 26th goal and 48th point off assists from Leahy and Patrice Bergeron. Hilbert's goal was the only even-strength marker of the opening frame.

The Sound Tigers tied the game with a pair of quick-strike goals 2:24 apart. First, Sean Bergenheim scored his tenth goal of the year off assists from Jim Campbell and Kevin Colley just nine seconds into a power play at the 7:34 mark. Then, Campbell blasted an impossible-angle goal past Providence goaltender Hannu Toivonen for his fifth goal of the season at 9:58 off assists from Colley and Chris Campoli. Campbell was originally credited with the Sound Tigers' first goal, but a scoring change gave credit on the play to Bergenheim.

The Bruins regained the lead with another power-play goal with 3:42 left in the period as Kevin Dallman redirected a Keith Aucoin shot for his fifth goal of the year with Bergeron earning the other assist.

The teams equaled their first-period output with five more goals in the middle frame.

The Sound Tigers tied the game at 3-3 just 43 seconds into the second period at even strength as Blaine Down redirected a Bruno Gervais shot for his third goal of the season. Campoli earned the second assist on the play.

Providence once again regained the lead, this time at 4-3, on Hilbert's second goal of the game off assists from Aucoin and Brad Boyes at the 2:47 mark, but the Sound Tigers tied it 4-4 when Bergenheim notched his second goal of the night off assists from Colley and Jody Robinson. Colley's third helper of the contest tied a Sound Tigers' single-game record.

Colley equaled another single-game team mark and gave the Sound Tigers their first lead at 5-4 with his fourth point of the game, his eighth goal of the season, on the power play at 14:31 off assists from Collins and Campbell. The goal also chased Toivonen from the Bruins net in favor of Cody Rudkowsky. Toivonen stopped 11 of 16 shots in 34:31 of work.

Hilbert completed the hat trick on the power play with his 28th goal of the year off assists from Dallman and Aucoin to tie the score at 5-5 with 1:56 left in the period.

David Gove then put Providence ahead 6-5 with his eighth goal of the season 8:58 into the third period off an assist from Jayme Filipowicz.

The Sound Tigers called timeout and pulled goaltender Dieter Kochan in favor of an extra attacker with 47.6 seconds left to play, but a pass back to the blue line in the offensive zone skipped over the stick of Campbell and rolled the length of the ice into the empty cage to seal the win for the Bruins at 7-5 with 32.2 seconds left to play. Bergeron was the last Providence player to touch the puck and was credited with his 14th goal of the year.

Hilbert was the first star of the game, Colley the second and Leahy the third. Kochan made 40 saves in a losing effort while Rudkowsky earned the win with 11 saves as the Bruins had a 47-27 shots on goal advantage. The Sound Tigers were 3 for 3 on the power play while Providence was 4 for 6.

The Sound Tigers will host the Philadelphia Phantoms tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. and the Hartford Wolf Pack Sunday at 4:05 p.m. Both games will be web cast live at www.soundtigers.com with tomorrow's game also airing live on 600 WICC-AM.

This Saturday and Sunday will be "Scout Weekend" at Bridgeport's Arena at Harbor Yard with specially-discounted ticket prices for all scouts and their families. Scouts who arrive in uniform will receive a souvenir Sound Tigers ‚¬" Scout patch while supplies last. All packs, troops and crews will be recognized on the digital display boards and public address system.

All fans who attend tomorrow's game can register for a chance to win a car courtesy of Stamford Volvo and the first 2,000 to enter tomorrow's game will receive a special coupon from CCM.

Immediately following Sunday's game, the Sound Tigers will present a "CVS Pharmacy All-Star Hockey Game" to benefit the Children's Glaucoma Foundation. Jim Craig, Ken Morrow, Brad Park, Ken Hodge, John Bucyk, John McKenzie and Rick Middleton are among those scheduled to appear for the benefit game. All fans with a ticket to the Sound Tigers' Wolf Pack game will be admitted to the celebrity game.

The Stanley Cup will also be at Bridgeport's Arena at Harbor Yard during both games this Sunday. Fans can have their picture taken with the cup for a $10 donation with all from the photos going to the Children's Glaucoma Foundation.
