Manchester Monarchs News Release
MANCHESTER, NH â Goaltender Adam Hauser had 22 saves and four players scored goals as the Manchester Monarchs beat the Portland Pirates, 4-1, before a sold out (9,916) Verizon Wireless Arena on Friday night. With the win, the Monarchs (32-9-3-1, 68 points) moved three points ahead of the Hartford Wolf Pack (31-12-1-2, 65 points) in the American Hockey League's Atlantic Division. The win also means the Monarchs coaching staff will be behind the bench for the PlanetUSA AHL All-Star team when Manchester hosts the 2005 Dodge AHL All-Star Classic on February 13-14.
Center Jared Ulmer gave the Pirates the early 1-0 lead with his third goal, scored when he beat Hauser (23 shots, 22 saves) on a wrap-around 6:37 into the opening period. Right wings Graham Mink and Jonas Johansson shared assists on the play.
The Monarchs countered with a goal just 25 seconds later from left wing Jeff Giuliano to tie the game. Center Matt Ryan and defenseman Doug Nolan each assisted on the fifth goal of the season for Giuliano, triggered from the left circle.
The Monarchs gained their first lead at the 10:39 of the period with a power play goal from right wing George Parros. All-Star defenseman Denis Grebeshkov and left wing Chris Schmidt assisted on Parros' fifth goal of the season, jammed past goaltender Maxime Ouellet (29 shots, 25 saves) and into the Portland net on a rebound.
The Monarchs added to their lead in the middle period with the 20th goal of the season for left wing Dustin Brown, who tucked a rebound just inside the right post at 3:42. All-Star center Michael Cammalleri, the Monarchs leading scorer (29-35=64), and right wing Brad Smyth notched assists on the goal. Cammalleri (6-8=14) and Smyth (3-6=9) extended their scoring streaks to eight games (6-8=14) on the play.
Cammalleri also played a major part in the next Monarchs goal, scored on the power play just before the end of the period. Cammalleri recorded his league-leading 29th goal by neatly backhanding a rebound into the net at 18:52. Defenseman Jason Holland and Smyth assisted on the goal.
Hauser held the Pirates off the board in the third period with seven saves. His record improved to 11-4-1 on the season. Ouellet, replaced by goaltender Kirk Daubenspeck in the third period, took the loss. His record dropped to 15-19-3.
