Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, CT - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, lost 2-1 at home to the Norfolk Admirals Saturday in the first of a two home games in as many nights to open the third-annual "Pride In America Weekend" at Bridgeport's Arena at Harbor Yard.
Mikhail Yakubov took advantage of a turnover in front of the Sound Tigers' net to give Norfolk a 1-0 lead 5:02 into the game. The unassisted goal was Yakubov's second marker of the season.
The Admirals doubled their lead to 2-0 as Quintin Laing redirected a Tim O'Connell shot for his third goal of the season with 8:03 left in the second period, just three seconds after a penalty to the Sound Tigers' Blaine Down expired. Norfolk Captain Ajay Baines also assisted on Laing ¬â¢s goal.
The Sound Tigers drew to within 2-1 on a nice play by Ryan Kraft who gloved down a clearing attempt at the top of the left circle and moved through traffic into the slot before roofing a backhand shot for his fifth goal of the season, unassisted, with 3:46 left in the middle frame.
The Sound Tigers took a timeout and pulled Goaltender Wade Dubielewicz in favor of an extra attacker with just under a minute left in the third period. They also went on a major power play at the 19:18 mark when Admirals Defenseman Marty Wilford high-sticked Jeff Hamilton. However, the Sound Tigers were unable to tie the game.
The Sound Tigers were 0 for 5 on the power play while Norfolk was 0 for 2 and had a 30-23 shots on goal advantage. Dubielewicz had a five-game winning streak and 12-game unbeaten streak, 11-0-1, snapped despite a 28-save effort. Admirals Netminder Craig Anderson made 22 saves for the win. Yakubov was the first star of the game, Kraft the second, and Laing the third.
