Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, CT "" The Sound Tigers came back from deficits of 1-0 and 2-1 to tie the score in the second period, and appeared to erase a 3-2 deficit midway through the third period when Johan Sundstrom found the back of the net, but his apparent equalizer was waved off and Bridgeport fell 3-2 to the Connecticut Whale at Webster Bank Arena on Saturday night. With the win, the Whale improves to 35-27-5-3 overall. The Sound Tigers fall to 29-29-6-5.
The Sound Tigers and Whale entered the third period tied at two after Matt Donovan and Brock Nelson each scored to erase one-goal deficits in the second period. The Whale regained its lead 1:54 into the final frame when Chris Kreider's shot deflected off of Aaron Ness onto Brandon Segal's stick in the slot, and Segal fired over Rick DiPietro's blocker for a 3-2 lead.
The Sound Tigers dominated the third period from that point forward, outshot the Whale 14-3 over the final 20 minutes and appeared to tie the game with 10:23 left in regulation. Ness sent a pass to Sundstrom as he trailed the play, and the rookie forward fired into the net to tie the game at three. However, forward John Persson battled with Whale forward Brandon Mashinter at the top of the crease as Sundstrom scored, and Persson was deemed to have interfered with Mashinter as the two stopped in front of the net, nullifying Sundstrom's equalizer and awarding the Whale a power play.
Bridgeport continued to pressure Whale goaltender Cam Talbot and nearly netted the tying goal at the end of regulation, but Ryan Strome's desperation shot crossed the goal line just after time had expired, preserving the Whale win.
The Whale had the only power play of the first period, and score late on its man-advantage to take an early 1-0 lead. Whale forward Benn Ferreiro carried the puck on the rush into the right circle of the Sound Tigers zone, cut towards the net and beat goaltender Rick DiPietro to give the visitors the lead.
The Sound Tigers answered midway through the second period, when Brandon DeFazio found a cutting Matt Donovan at the top of the crease to one-time the puck past Talbot for his 13th goal of the season to knot the score at one. Ryan Bourque scored just 59 seconds later to regain the Whale's lead, but the Sound Tigers responded just 1:01 after Bourque's tying tally. Stu Bickel was sent off for holding, and Brock Nelson found the rebound from Joey Diamond's deflection and beat Talbot for his 22nd goal of the season.
The Sound Tigers outshot the Whale 27-10 over the final two periods and 40-20 in the game. Talbot made 38 saves to earn his 25th win of the year, while DiPietro made 17 saves in the loss.
The Sound Tigers return to action tomorrow evening when they host the Adirondack Phantoms at 5:00 p.m.
