BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (April 7, 2013) - Sound Tigers forward David Ullstrom scored twice and added an assist, defenseman Ty Wishart recorded three assists and Rick DiPietro made 34 saves as Bridgeport defeated the Adirondack Phantoms 4-1 at Webster Bank Arena on Sunday evening. With the win, the Sound Tigers improve to 30-29-6-5. The Phantoms fall to 28-35-3-4.
Ullstrom set the tone just 46 seconds into the game, sending his own rebound past Phantoms goaltender Cal Heeter for his seventh goal of the season. The third-year Sound Tiger pushed the home team's lead to two 3:02 into the second period, when he fired Matt Watkins' pass at the front of the net through traffic for his second goal of the game.
Adirondack cut its deficit in half at the 7:28 mark of the second period. Jason Akeson skated in all alone on the right side of the Sound Tigers zone towards DiPietro and shot the puck through his pads for his 16th goal of the season.
Brock Nelson scored his fourth goal in three games to give the Sound Tigers their second two-goal cushion early in the third period. Nelson skated into the left circle for the Adirondack zone and sent a shot off of Andreas Lilja's skate that fluttered over Heeter's shoulder to give the Sound Tigers a 3-1 lead.
The Phantoms were unable to pull Heeter in favor of the extra skater late in the game, as Bridgeport kept the action deep in the Adirondack zone, and scored in the final minute of play. Ullstrom worked hard behind the Phantoms net and found John Persson at the top of the crease, who shot over Heeter's blocker for his first goal since Feb. 12, and the Sound Tigers skated away with the 4-1 win.
DiPietro's 34-save performance improves his record to 8-6-0, while Heeter made 36 saves in the loss for the Phantoms.
The Sound Tigers close out their four-game homestand on Tuesday night when they host the Worcester Sharks at 7:00 p.m.
NOTES: Wishart was a team-high plus-4 in the game for the Sound Tigers ... Matt Watkins had the primary assist on both of Ullstrom's goals ... Nathan McIver recorded seven penalty minutes, and now has 283 for the season, 12 shy of Eric Godard's single-season Sound Tigers record ... The Sound Tigers penalty kill went a perfect 7-for-7.
