San Antonio Rampage News Release
SAN ANTONIO (April 7, 2013) - Garrett Wilson scored his third goal of the year, but the San Antonio Rampage (29-33-2-6) were unable to get past the Western Conference-leading Texas Stars (40-19-5-6) and fell to their divisional rival, 5-1, on Sunday afternoon at AT&T Center in front of 6,599 fans.
Forward Francis Beauvillier tallied his first professional point with an assist on Garret Wilson's goal in only his second game with the Rampage after signing an amateur tryout contract with the club on Thursday.
Rampage netminder Dov Grumet-Morris turned aside 35-of-40 shots in the defeat. San Antonio is now 2-8-0-0 against Texas this season and will play the Stars two more times at AT&T Center to wrap up the season series (April 14, 16).
Texas struck first at 4:33 of the opening frame off an odd-man rush. Mike Hedden cashed in for the Stars after a nice pass from defenseman Jamie Oleksiak to allow the Texas forward to walk in on Grumet-Morris. Entering the contest, the Stars had scored first in 28 games, owning a dominant 19-4-0-5 record when striking first.
Rookie Jared Gomes had the best scoring opportunity for the Rampage in the first period after Jed Ortmeyer snuck a pass to the top of the crease with six minutes remaining in the frame. Gomes received the pass, but fired a shot just wide of the net as a Stars defenseman closed in on him. The Rampage trailed 1-0 and were outshot, 11-7, after 20 minutes of action.
San Antonio tied the game at 2:27 of the second period after a great effort by the forward corps to keep the puck in the offensive zone. Ortmeyer battled on the backcheck to generate a turnover and Beauvillier collected the loose puck before finding Wilson wide open at the top of the left circle. Wilson walked in on Texas goaltender Jack Campbell and bet the Stars netminder low.
Texas reclaimed the lead only 1:21 after Wilson's goal when Toby Petersen fired a shot from the left boards while on the power play that deflected off a Rampage defenseman and past Grumet-Morris.
The Stars extended their lead to 3-1 at 12:07 of the middle frame with a goal from Travis Morin. Kevin Connauton collected an assist on the goal, his second helper of the game.
Texas outshot San Antonio, 20-6, in the second period but Grumet-Morris held strong in the waning moments of the frame, despite an offensive onslaught by Texas.
The Stars added two goals in the third period to put the game out of reach for San Antonio. Reilly Smith lit the lamp first at 3:34 of the final frame and Mike Commodore followed suit at 7:45 of the final frame to give the visitors a 5-1 lead.
Texas outshot San Antonio, 40-21, in the game and went 1-for-4 on the power play, while the Rampage were 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
The Rampage will travel to Houston on Thursday for a 7:05 p.m. puck drop against the Aeros at Toyota Center. Tickets for all remaining Rampage home games start at $10 and can be purchased at the AT&T Center Southeast Box Office, by calling a Rampage representative at 210-444-5554 or online at sarampage.com.
