Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Chad Kolarik's two-goal game helped the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins run their win streak to five games with a 4-3 triumph over the Hershey Bears on Sunday afternoon at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.
It was the Bears getting off to a fast start as Dmitri Orlov spun away from a defender at the right blueline and fired a shot that ricocheted off of a body in front for a 1-0 Hershey lead 1:54 into the game.
The Penguins found their legs and knotted the score, 1-1, at 12:13 of the first thanks to a great rush by Jayson Megna. The rookie forward was able to split the Hershey defense, settle down the puck and slip a backhand pass between his legs that slid through the crease and was easily tapped in by Paul Thompson.
Working on the power play late in the period, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton marched ahead, 2-1, when Brian Dumoulin's point shot found its way past a screened Philip Grubauer.
Chad Kolarik continued his push for the AHL scoring lead, finding the back of the net twice to give the Penguins a three-goal cushion. Taking a feed from Trevor Smith, Kolarik pulled out of the far corner of the Hershey zone and tucked through the pads of Grubauer.
A power play carrying over into the third period helped Wilkes-Barre/Scranton take a seemingly comfortable 4-1 lead in a minute as Kolarik banged home a rebound off of a Riley Holazpfel shot for his 28th goal of the season and second of the contest.
The Bears would not go away quietly and shrunk Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's lead to just one with a 5-on-4 goal by Ryan Potulny and an even-strength strength marker by Peter LeBlanc that made the score 4-3 with 6:12 remaining.
Brad Thiessen made 31 saves on 34 Hershey shots to go 15-11-2 on the season. Grubauer stopped 18-of-22 for the Bears.
Hershey's Patrick Wellar had a penalty shot attempt at 10:02 of the first that was saved by Thiessen.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins head to Newfoundland for a two-game set against the St. John's IceCaps, beginning on Saturday, April 13 at 6:00 PM EDT. Tune into 102.3 The Mountain or ahllive.com.
