Hartford, CT -- The Providence Bruins defeated the Connecticut Whale 1-0 this afternoon at the XL Center. Ryan Spooner scored the lone goal for the Bruins, his 14th of the season. Niklas Svedberg made 28 saves as the Bruins improved to 44-21-0-5.

The Whale, still looking to secure a playoff spot, controlled the opening minutes of play in Connecticut. However, Svedberg kept the Whale off the board by standing on his head and making some highlight reel saves. The Bruins turned it on halfway through the frame and were quick to capitalize. Spooner found the puck in the neutral zone, skated into Connecticut's end and ripped a shot over Jason Missiaen's shoulder to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead at 12:28. Kyle MacKinnon assisted on the opening goal.

Despite no goals being added to the game sheet in the second period, there were plenty of penalty minutes. In his first game with the Bruins since being acquired at the trade deadline, Rob Flick dropped the gloves with Dylan McIllrath at 4:53. In 51 games with Rockford this season, Flick recorded 97 penalty minutes, including seven fighting majors and was part of two bench clearing brawls. Staying true to his reputation, Flick easily dropped McIllrath with a few swift punches. In addition to Flick's fight, Kevan Miller also dropped the gloves with Nick Palmieri for his sixth fight of the season.

Looking to tie the game, the Whale came out hungry in the third period. However, Svedberg was simply unbreakable as he stopped anything and everything the Whale threw his way. The Whale pulled Missiaen late in the frame, but they couldn't produce with the extra attacker. The Bruins held on for the 1-0 win to sweep the weekend. The shutout marked Svedberg's fourth of the season, which ties for the most among AHL rookie netminders.

The Bruins return to The Dunk on Friday, April 12 versus the Hershey Bears. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. for Kids T-Shirt Night. The first 1,000 kids 12&under will receive a free t-shirt courtesy of Graphic Ink, Washington Trust, Seekonk Supply and Super Cuts.
