BINGHAMTON, NY - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, beat the Binghamton Senators 5-4 on the road Saturday on the strength of a Justin Papineau natural hat trick. With the win, the Sound Tigers finished a season-opening stretch of four straight road games with five standings points and a 2-1-1 record.
Binghamton opened the scoring with an opportunistic power-play goal at the 2:38 mark as Steve Martins intercepted a pass behind the Sound Tigers net and zipped the puck to Jeff Heerema who was all alone in the slot for his first goal of the season to make it 1-0, but the Sound Tigers answered with a goal on the advantage jut 2:05 later as Rob Collins one-timed a Justin Papineau feed for his third marker of the year, with Bruno Gervais also assisting on the equalizer.
The Sound Tigers took their first lead of the contest on Kevin Colley's third goal of the season with 4:48 left in the first period off assists from Mike Jarmuth and Gervais. The helper was Jarmuth's first point as a Sound Tiger in his first AHL game.
The Senators took their second power play into the first intermission and had it turn into a two-man advantage early in the middle frame and they converted both ends to go ahead 3-2. Martins redirected a Filip Novak shot for his second goal of the year, a five-on-three marker, with Denis Hamel collecting the other assist at the :59 mark. Hamel then notched his first tally of the season, on the back end of the two-man advantage, just 1:22 later off assists from Martins and Novak. However, the Sound Tigers rallied to tie the game and retake the lead with a two-goal outburst late in the period.
Papineau tied the score at 3-3 with his second goal of the season at the 13:39 mark off assists from Sean Bergenheim and Collins. He then put the Sound Tigers on top 4-3 with 40.8 seconds left in the middle frame with his second marker of the evening and third of the season, a power-play tally, off assists from Bergenheim and Gervais.
Papineau gave the Sound Tigers the largest lead of the evening at 5-3 when he completed the hat trick 5:03 into the third period with a power-play goal off assists from Jeremy Colliton and Collins, but Binghamton pulled back to within 5-4 with 12:45 to play on Heerema's second tally off assists from Greg Watson and Charlie Stephens.
The Senators had a chance to tie the game when they went on a brief five-on-three advantage with 4:22 left to play but could not score. They then sealed their own fate by going down two men inside the final two minutes.
Papineau was the first star of the game, Heerema the second, and Gervais the third. The Sound Tigers were 3 for 11 on the power play while Binghamton was 3 for 8. The shots were tied at 21. Chris Madden earned his first win as a Sound Tiger with 17 saves while Billy Thompson took the loss with 16 stops.
The Sound Tigers will open the home portion of their 2005-06 schedule next Saturday and Sunday, October 22nd and 23rd when they host the Portland Pirates Saturday at 7:05 p.m. and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins Sunday at 4:05 p.m. at Bridgeport's Arena at Harbor Yard.
