Manchester Monarchs News Release
MANCHESTER, NH - Right wing Petr Kanko scored the game-winning goal, 2:32 in to overtime in the Manchester Monarchs, 3-2, victory over the Springfield Falcons in front of a sellout crowd of 9,916 at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Saturday night.
In a two-on-one breakaway, left wing Noah Clarke fed the puck to Kanko in the right face-off circle and Kanko buried it behind Falcons goaltender Gerald Coleman for the Monarchs 2005-06 home opener win.
Monarchs' right wing Lauri Tukonen tied the game with 56-seconds left in regulation to push the game to overtime. A scramble ensued at the front of the net and Tukonen tapped in right wing Konstantin Pushkarev's shot. Defenseman Denis Grebeshkov also assisted on Tukonen's first of the year.
Springfield took the lead as right wing Evgeni Artyukhin skated with center Jason Jaspers down the right wing on a breakaway with less than two-minutes remaining in the third period. Artyukhin opted to keep the puck and fired a shot, glove-side past Monarchs goaltender Adam Hauser.
The Falcons got on the board with right wing Norm Milley's goal at the 24-second mark of the third period. Milley capitalized on a 5-on-3 Springfield power play that was expected to expire one-second later. Forward Ryan Vesce and defenseman Brad Tiley assisted on Milley's goal.
Pushkarev opened up the scoring with his first of the season from defenseman Richard Petiot at 1:12 of the second period. Petiot shoveled the puck to Pushkarev, who skated in, wide open, on Coleman. Pushkarev fired the shot low blocker side on Coleman and gave the Monarchs a 1-0 lead.
Hauser earned his first win of the season, stopping 37 of the Falcons 39 shots. Coleman took his first loss of the season (0-1-0), stopping 32 shots.
The Monarchs head out west for the first time in franchise history as they face-off against the San Antonio Rampage on Friday, October 21 at the SBC Center. Puck drop is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. (EST). Continuing their trip out west, the Monarchs next stop is the Houston Aeros at the Toyota Center on Saturday, October 22 at 8:35 p.m. (EST).
